My point was, even though it's easy to come up with a general description from an outside view, the people under said definition differ so greatly in opinion that it's impossible to incorporate everyone under that general definition, which is a lot like the furry fandom.
We may now go back to discussing the point of this thread.

Re: POLL: So... Who here's a furry?
I agree, I think that's just pride coming in. If you have extremists or fanatics who claim to fly the same banner as you, whether that be political support, musical tastes or, in this case, belonging to the 'furry fandom', you attempt to distance yourself from them. If you are not strong in your own sense of belonging to that group, you would do that by leaving the group. If you do, however, feel you belong in that group, you would say the extremist does not, and that their claim is somehow less valid than your own.My point was, even though it's easy to come up with a general description from an outside view, the people under said definition differ so greatly in opinion that it's impossible to incorporate everyone under that general definition, which is a lot like the furry fandom.
As we've seen here, there are so many different views of what is 'extreme' in being a furry that no one can agree on what one actually is.
My bad. I tried to be neutral, but I understand why you had to delete it. Won't happen again.Hey, guys, could not discuss politics here? Like, at all. Because that always breaks down into arguing very, very fast.

Re: POLL: So... Who here's a furry?
That's kind of why I made the question "do you think you're a furry" rather than "are you a furry." Different people will define it different ways, so I felt this was the fairest.
Now technically I think it's possible for someone to be a furry without believing themselves to be one (looking at you, Scott Ramsoomair), but it doesn't really matter to me, since it's just a word. What difference does it make to me if people admit it? If they're happier denying it, it makes no difference to me or anyone else. Everyone's personal tastes remain the same, so all that changes is a silly little word. Therefore I think the question I asked is still the best one. Otherwise I'd have to make a litmus test and I don't want to go there. That'd be impossible.

Also, I've been considering attending a furry convention. There are a couple near where I live, but I don't think I'll go to any until after I move out. I just graduated from High School, and I'm staying with my parents for my first year of college.

I'm kind of frightened to go to one. Plus, I don't really know what I'd do there. At the same time I'm somewhat curious. It's a pretty easy decision for me to make, however, since I'm several states away from any furry convention of note and I'm not going to take a big trip to go to something that might be totally weird and not fun.

I live in the middle of England, so I had the same feeling (With the very very few conventions of any kind that take place in England usually being London) until I found out about Confuzzled, which is in Manchester and much much closer, and which I might eventually, out of sheer curiosity, have to check out. I'd only go if I knew a fair few people who were also going though, and I'd need to go with a RL friend just in case...I'm kind of frightened to go to one. I am a furry. I have furry characters, whom I imagine incorporating into some kind of comic, I have a preference to furry artwork, and I love Kobolds a lot. :v
But, like you guys discussed before, saying I'm a furry is like saying I'm a gamer or nerd or artist, it's really a vague description that probably makes you imagine a different picture of me than the reality is :vv

Yeah we don't have a lot o' them 'round these parts.
I wouldn't worry about the poll mistake, because if I'm not mistaken, earlier a furry clicked "not a furry" by some kind of mistake. You'd cancel out. Unless that vote was changed. I don't know. I can't change votes, so not my problem.

Re: POLL: So... Who here's a furry?
Back to give my experiences. Furries are a hated group and for many many good reasons.
Non-Furries usually don't see the good reasons to fursecute, they get held up on the porn and half-animal part. I don't get the later, and as for the former, all sexual desire for anyone who you do not see in real life is a fantasy. Models are airbrushed and photoshopped into creatures that are just as unrealistic as furred humans are.
Anyway, from a furry perspective, I see a ton that is wrong in the fandom itself. It's a massive hugbox and furries are too unilateral with their support for each other. However, try talking to one of the hugboxers, nothing but a bunch of self centered children. Oh, and the abundance of young kids is worrying as well, the fandom is immature. The art is usually never that good and the last one that actually blew my mind was Lando's beautiful drawing of Fuzzypaws' commission. Seriously, one of the most amazing furry artworks I've seen. Yet the rest usually sucks.
As for myself, I don't consider myself a part of the fandom. Furry is not a reason to associate with people for me, other interests such as music, hipster elitism, and omg movies for sure are reasons to talk to others. It's an interest, I am an aspiring fursuiter as well, but nonetheless, I feel that the fandom is certainly not for me.

Well that seems a bit racists, how many fursuits users or groups have you actually met?
I'm not jumping to conclusion of who or how they are till I meat at least 2 groups.
also, I do think the fursuit is strange, (and wearing a tail). but having a tag of my fursona and talking to some other "furry's" seems to me like a lot of fun :S

You know Hipster...your responce to this is the first to get me at least a little iritated. With all due respect, I don't know why it irritates me. Maybe you're telling the cold, hard truth. Maybe you're simply giving an honest oppinion that highly disagree's with my own.
Maybe I agree with you. Of course, even if I did agree with you, you've put it in black and white. In doing so, you've put it very harsh, especially considering everyone elses ideas on furry fandom...or at least everyone else here's.
Maybe it's just the top line. I may be underestimating your 'experiences'. Also, you've stated your oppinion as fact. In doing so, you're saying you are right. If I've realised anything, it's that there is no right answer for eavryone.
Lastly, I feel I must say that I respect you and your oppinion. I've given my own view back however.

Re: POLL: So... Who here's a furry?
I can completely understand you're other points, but the above seems quite moot. Any group that produces it's own content will have a large amount of crap produced, because 1. it takes a lot longer to produce something good, so the people who actually put effort in produce lessOh, and the abundance of young kids is worrying as well, the fandom is immature. The art is usually never that good and the last one that actually blew my mind was Lando's beautiful drawing of Fuzzypaws' commission. Seriously, one of the most amazing furry artworks I've seen. Yet the rest usually sucks.
2. Some people think they're better than they are and keep making bad quality things
3. people will never know if they're good or not unless they have tried and practised for a long time, meaning that a lot of crap is produced before people get good, if they ever do, but they won't know until they've already done it
and 4. Some people are only in it for the interaction and community aspect of things. They know they're not great, but they don't do it to be good. They draw because they like to and because they want to talk with other people who like to.
Point being, you can look at any group that makes it's own stuff and say the same. Look at the Sprite community, or Newgrounds, or DeviantArt. All of them produce more bad things than good. It's how things work. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, and even what I've quoted from you is quite true, but it's not in itself a reason to dislike the fandom.
Re: POLL: So... Who here's a furry?
Most people that "fursecute" (terrible word by the way, I dislike sticking fur on the beginning of a word) could care less that people like anthro art. They do it because The Fandom is one giant target. Troll's exist to get a negative reaction so when you react violently to someone with a Bic ballpoint pen In Hell their going over they're spray all your doing is feeding them. If someone joins your TF2 server and starts spamming mute and move on, preferably don't even give them the satisfaction of acknowledging it, they'll get bored and leave. But so many members of the fandom simply can't do that and take every word as a personal insult.Hipstar wrote:Back to give my experiences. Furries are a hated group and for many many good reasons.

Also 99% of furry drama is self inflicted, I'm serious. When I go on a board and see a "coming out of the closet" thread about telling your family I have to roll my eyes. ITS NOT LIKE BEING GAY (unless you are gay and admitting that too)! If you run around hiding it like its this terrible blemish on your soul what is everyone going to see it as? A terrible blemish on your soul. I'm open about it, I'm not going to rub it in your face but if you ask I'll freely admit it, all my friends know, my parents know, and you know what? Not one thing really changed, other the occasional lunch room jibe.
And yes the fandom is getting younger, I don't know if this indicates a coming flood of tweens turning it into the next "life-style" craze but right now I can tell you its not the little kids who count for the immaturity, a lot of 20 somethings out there are pretty immature too.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and I'm a furry.

Re: POLL: So... Who here's a furry?
Usually when writes something under their name that does not list facts, one can assume the author is giving their opinion. In fact, I use in fact when I am stating facts and leave the rest up to opinion. It's sorta like how radians are the standard measurement for angles and not degrees.
And my experiences have been effed up to say the least, horror stories about people ive met online and irl who obviously need some sort of mental help.
That is the problem with the furry hugbox. It accepts everyone who wants to be a member of the club. Ever see a frat that accepts everyone? They're usually lame and people don't like those frats. Furries need to be much more selective about who can join and who cannot join, otherwise the fandom will keep its bad rep.
Also, fursuiting never struck me as weird other than to get one for the sake of getting one. I have a performance art piece that goes with the suit I plan to get.

Re: POLL: So... Who here's a furry?
The world would be a better place if people were judged as individuals and not as groups. Also Hipstar the fandom doesn't have any organization or even a real definition to what it "is" so excluding people from it is impossible. Furry is label ANYONE can take, therefore no one can REALLY be excluded. I don't want the fandom to turn into some sort of Elite frat house, I just calmly distance my self from those insane peeps and don't worry as much about what people on he internet think of me. Furry doesn't have to be a handy-cap to your social life, and I could care less if the fandom is something "popular".Dr. Prower wrote:It would be so much easier if people wouldn't judge the furry community by the worst people in it.

I think it could only get that way once it becomes big enough for the fandom to subdivide, much like the anime fandom did; then you can associate with whichever subdivision you like

The furry fandom should be like Sigma Pi.
SIGMA PI WOOOOOOOTTTT
Yeah Rick that is a good point, but there's a difference. Anime is all Japanese animation. What constitutes furry art is far less abundant, so it can't be afforded the same sort of luxury weebs get.

It works with pretty much anything! :3Dr. Prower wrote:It would be so much easier if people wouldn't judge the _____ by the worst people in it.
The issue with furries is you only "join" by sharing an interest but when you're in a lot of people treat it like an establishment. If that weren't the case, people would never say that they've decided to "leave the fandom." However that works.

actually, on a comic convention in Holland, the Anime booth was shared with the furry booth, one day for anime, and the next for furry's.rickgriffin wrote:I think it could only get that way once it becomes big enough for the fandom to subdivide, much like the anime fandom did; then you can associate with whichever subdivision you like
so its safe to say its defendantly growing.

Explains the demographic median shifting towards the younger crowd.Kyderra wrote:actually, on a comic convention in Holland, the Anime booth was shared with the furry booth, one day for anime, and the next for furry's.rickgriffin wrote:I think it could only get that way once it becomes big enough for the fandom to subdivide, much like the anime fandom did; then you can associate with whichever subdivision you like

Tried to find whoever posted this but was too lazy to go back a page if that's where I'd find you, but nonetheless I have to point out Sturgeon's Law, as defined by TV Tropes: 90% of everything is crud. There's a lot more junk art out there than there is good art. Now cut that down into a much, much smaller scope, and of course the amount of worth while furry artwork seems really tiny.
Can't blame this one particular fandom for a phenomenon present in every area of.. well everything :v
