Ah all the issues with Jurassic Park! I love it.
Yes, they were, the "velociraptors" in the book and movie they were based on Deinonychus and were just called velociraptors because that name was more recognizable and cooler. In fact, they are rather accurate to what was known at the time (yes feathered dinos were speculated but when the book was written it was still a fringe belief IIRC.)D-Rock wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 12:04 am [2020/06/03 - Fun Dinosaur Facts]

No stopping Ace talking now(!)
And, now we’ve heard Ace speak,
we can’t get her to stop.
Even her noble sis
has to use a new prop.
Like any good, smart, kid,
she knows all of the facts;
from how the T-Rex looked
to how the Raptor acts.
Don’t try to con the kids,
they’re the smartest you’ll find.
Putting a bucket on?
Well, that’s just unkind.

Ah, brotherly/sisterly love!
For those of you who don't know or don't remember the movie:
For those of you who don't know or don't remember the movie:
- Olive is Dr. Alan Grant, a quasi-bankrupt paleontologist specialized in Velociraptors and hating children, here to say whether Jurassic Park is "authentic" or not
- Ace is Tim, Hammond's action-loving bookworm of a grandson
- Draig is Lex, Hammond's hippie-ish computer geek of a granddaughter
- Grape is John Hammond, the lovable 70-year-old millionare who has "spared no expense" building Jurassic Park
- Max is Dr. Ian Malcolm, the breakout-role eccentric chaos theory specialist charged with saying how everything could go horribly wrong
- Rook is Dr. Ellie Sattler, a paleontologists quasi-romantically involved with Dr. Grant, specialized in prehistoric plants and adoring children, here to say whether Jurassic Park is "authentic" or not
- Sabrina is Lawyer Don Gennaro, the representative of Jurassic Park's stockholders who want to kick Hammond off the board
- Pueblo is Jurassic Park's zookeper Robert Muldoon, who acts like Crocodile Dundee (who is from Austrlia), though he, himself, canonically is from Kenya
- North Star is the big Velociraptor
- Darth Vader Sanchez is a baby Velociraptor
- Craig is Dennis Nedry, the fed-up underpaid (or so he claims) tech geek working at Jurassic park
- Peanut is everyone else, including the postproduction team

Re: 2020/06/03 - Fun Dinosaur Facts
Also, weren’t the dinosaurs only able to get that big because there was so much more oxygen in the air? So they’d be much smaller if cloned in our own time period? I know that’s the case with bugs and insects, but I can’t remember if it’s true for other animals.
Also, I’m loving the interactions between all the cubs. Adorable

Wish I'd had a "Silence Bucket" back when I was teaching - wonder how it'd work in the Zoom classroom?
Re: 2020/06/03 - Fun Dinosaur Facts
Feathers? When the movie came out it was up to date with the science of the time.

As I recall the Feathers were accepted by scientists at the time but not generally known publicly so they fudged the issue somewhat.

I don’t know if the Silence Bucket is going to work, Olive. Also, Ace is adorable.

Aww, they’re so cute interacting together. This arc keeps getting better and better

It occurs to me that Draig/Craig may recall meeting actual dinosaurs.

There's still not much clarity on the feathers. Some speculate that only juveniles had feathers. There's also questions about which species did not have them and, for the feathered species, how extensive their bodies were covered. At this point, though, the consensus is that many kinds had some feather-coverings, that these dinosaurs were likely warm-blooded, and that birds and dinosaurs are close kin. Don't tell Limu Emu. He might pull a Nedry on poor ol' Doug!Welsh Halfwit wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 6:24 amAs I recall the Feathers were accepted by scientists at the time but not generally known publicly so they fudged the issue somewhat.

They got the plant DNA from fossilized aphids, duh. Batrachian DNA! Frogs don't have feathers! LIFE WILL FIND A PLOTHOLE.

And Spielberg will skirt it!
Re: 2020/06/03 - Fun Dinosaur Facts
Wow, that kid knows a lot about the studies and the more accurate theories about dinosaurs... But, all that is a bit too much to be put in silence with a bucket. Jurassic Park is much more a fantasy movie than sci-fi...

DNA has a half-life of 521 years, so what are the chances it would be usable after 65 million years?

If Olive did bring the "Silence Bucket" from home, I can imagine an annoyed Bailey slamming it down on King's head so hard it dazes him into shutting up.

If he still can't spell after all these years look into getting him a tutor.

So much for my theory that Ace is a quiet introvert. Though I'm sticking with the idea that she has autism.

Errors pointed out by Ace,
Buckets worn to save one's face,
This plot has holes, Ace points them out,
Just costing Alan his clout.
All we know of history is wrong,
The claim that Ace makes is strong,
There're new dino facts that we now know,
And Grant's impatience is there on show.
