Re: Housepets! webshow, anyone?

Post by Obbl »

There's a particular few frames where he looks overbalanced. Physics dictates that he shouldn't recover from this position, and our brains pick up on this. Normally, when cartoonists stretch a character like that, it happens in only a couple of frames (at 24 fps). That way the distortion itself is too quick for the (normal, everyday) eye to follow while still giving the sense of motion. I don't know much about animating, but if you've got a lower frame rate, it seems that you have less time to stretch before it starts breaking our suspension of disbelief.

Maybe try playing around with faster editing to see just how little you can get away with showing us while still conveying the entire movement?
As a reference: Tony Zhou's explanation of Satoshi Kon's animation style (in particular around the 5 minute mark).
And really, just any of his Every Frame a Painting series. He's pretty awesome

Okay I get what you're saying. I'll try bumping the frames up to 30 instead of 24 and work around that :) That's what I usually work with, but I decided to use 24 for this one because I would have to mess around with the settings too much (the default is 24). I may make him stand a bit more upright in that pose, that way his leaning doesn't look too drastic.
Though I'm not sure why you showed me that video, as it had to do with the way scenes transition, not character physics :| . The frames part was the only thing kinda relevant to that. He also has a more realistic and "Eastern" style of animation, while I prioritize on the more "Western" style (which is far more exaggerated). I thought it was best to use the more Western style for Housepets! if anything. Also, this teaser is a still shot and will not be cutting away. If this were an episode, of course I would use different shots, angles, and environments to my advantage. That was a nifty technique for transitioning though, I'll keep it in mind for when I'm animating the episodes :D

Well I suppose by "in particular" I really meant "this is the only relevant part to this conversation", but yeah :P
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with :D

I'm putting finishing touches on the updated audio.

Also, how's the new thread title?

Just noticed this. Who's voicing who? I might be able to voice King, but the closest thing I have to a professional microphone is my iPad.
Play The Hayseed Knight. This isn’t self promotion, I just really like the game.

You ever realize that the two longest pieces of literature in existence are both fanfics? Weird right?

There's a list of who's voicing who here.
It's not complete yet; more characters will be added as their arcs appear.

Still on the first arc, Amazee.

That's sounding heaps better! Well done, guys!
I still think Peanut's yell at the start needs to be a little less subdued and his voice needs a little more energy in it, but that's just my personal opinion and it does sound good as is.

What does everyone else think?

It's good I guess, but I'm not really sure what changed from the last version. The audio sounds a bit more balanced but the problems from last time are still there (i.e Peanut's voice and the water effect). Again, if it's too much trouble for the voice actor to re-do the lines I can just make this the first episode/pilot and then make the changes in the second episode. It's not like shows don't do that when they come out anyway. :|

I changed the timing of the first few sentences to make them sound more natural, balanced the audio quality of Peanut's and Grape's voices, put high-pass filters and voice processing racks of all the voices, did some mastering work, and did what I could for the water effect (I made the shower sound louder and the bucket sound softer so the patter of falling water would be more prevalent).

Yeah, that's what I thought was changed. I mean I don't really think it was necessary to make such small changes in the audio (besides the water thing which upon listening again sound a bit better), but any improvement is an improvement. :)

Also if the voice actor decides to re-do the lines, I just noticed that he didn't make any grunts during the ninja scene, so it's literally just Grape making fighting sounds and seems kinda empty and awkward  . Even if he decides to keep the audio and begin voicing the second episode, we may want to fix this.

Hey! I'm an aspiring voice actor and I've already landed a role in an undisclosed fanwork (which I can't actually talk about until it's officially announced).

Anyway, I assume that this project is still active. There are still roles open on the Casting Call Club page (if that's still current) and I'll definitely audition for some of them when I get the chance, but the one I really want (Great Kitsune) isn't there. If this goes that far into the comic's run, where can I send that one?

Roles will be but up when the project reaches that point. You'll just have to wait until if the project gets to Dog Days of Summer.
Also, don't quote me on this, but I think the project head(GreatKitsune) has already reserved that role for himself, I recall something like that stated earlier.

Ah. GK is definitely my favorite character so far, but I'll be glad to be cast at all. Pete would be fun as well, though I'll also hold out for Joel/King...

I should be able to record my auditions on Tuesday.

Also, how long does it usually take for avatars to show up? I'm not sure if I was successful uploading mine or not.

No worries. I plan to audition like everyone else. :P Which is really weird when you think about it.

Anyways, Kitsune's role auditions, along with the other Celestials', will likely be opened when we finish the arc introducing Pete. Don't quote me on this, though. *cough*Chaoko.*cough* :P

Umm... that was meant to be a joke.

EDIT: The polls are back! Since arc 1 is in development and arc 2's early script is ready, It's time to cast Bino and Rex for arc 2.

You've got my vote for Pete. That's exactly how I imagine his voice sounds like. Also liked your Joey audition.
Douglas isn't my real name, but because of a name block put on me by a higher-order being known as Djinni, I can't say my real name.

I like Retto's Bino, I think that'll be my vote. I also liked Ryohayasa's voice, but not as Bino, I think he would make a great Fido, but he didn't audition for that, heh.
