valerio wrote:Apollo nodded. "Nice to make your aquaintance, Change. You know, I was a touristic guide and entertainer in Vegas all my life. Unlike you, I couldn't imagine myself far from the crowds. So, let's make another deal: Artemis and I will be your bouncers, your bodyguards. No one will dare to put their paws on you, not with us around! Hop-hop!" The black canine, standing in a plastic pose, jabbed and punched at an invisible enemy. then he turned again to the cat. "What did they do to you, to make you so scared of people?" He asked, with a genuine concern in his voice and expression
Change let him talk about how he loved to be around people and crowds; it made sense, he was a dog after all, pack mentality and all that. But the cat could care less about body guards; it wasn't that he was in physical danger from anyone besides that occasional psychopath that hated animals, or a driver that wasn't paying any attention while he crossed the road. No; he was as safe as the next pet from outside dangers.

The inner ones on the other paw....

He sighed, starting to actually speak as his head finally began to settle. "I spent the first third of my life on the streets." He said, clutching the book as he tightened his tail around his neck; it would never be strong enough to restrict his breathing, so he might as well get comfort from it. "I learned fast; if you got within arm's reach of someone, they were going to hurt you, and there was nothing you could do about it."

Dusk smiled. "Oh, hey, you live in the building next to mine! But I live a little higher, so we'll be taking the elevator." He led Phi to the entrance of his own building. "I lived in Yorkshire all my life, but we just moved to this neighborhood too." He opened the door and ushered Phi inside. "So, it's just the two of you?"

That explains a lot, Apollo thought. The poor creature had spent a lifetime immersed in the dark side of existence. He had seen so many strays, outside his job...
Apollo hung down his head, his voice turning sad. "I was always instructed to make sure the tourists never saw the strays, the misery bordering the light of the fancy life. I know you'll find it hypocrite, but the best I could do was use my allowance to buy food for the charities, the humans doing night turns to feed the strays. Heh, I had a friend, her name was Dina. A young cat living in an abandoned house: I stole the leftovers from the kitchen to feed her... But one day, she just disappeared." The big dog shrugged. "I miss her, I used to talk a lot with her. She made me learn of the life outside my world. And she sighed and dreamt at the tales of my life..."
Apollo smiled at Change. "I can imagine how hard it was for you. Whenever you feel like...talking with someone, venting, well, just come to my place." He gave the cat his address. "You know, for how much painful it must have been for you, living alone will never heal you. I know it, I saw it in Dina: she...transfigured, every time I came visit her. So...friends?" He held out his paw, his fist closed save for his little fingers curled in a hook.

Phi walked inside and turned to wait for Dusk. "Yep. Just us. I guess da-" He paused and furrowed his brow before continuing. "Henry, my owner, got a decent-paying job right out of college. Something to do with computers. But like I said before, it involved moving around a lot. He adopted me in the first city he stopped off in, and it's just been us ever since. Well, except for-" Phi cut himself off abruptly, and his eyes widened slightly as though he'd said more than he'd meant to. "Anyway, yeah. Just the two of us." Phi stepped back to allow Dusk to follow him in. "So, lead the way."

Dusk followed Phi inside. As the cat was talking about himself and his owner Dusk noticed he almost mentioned someone. He didn't miss that little signal, the pause, the look all too familiar. As he pressed the button to call the elevator he gave Phi a look of honest curiosity. Jane always said he should be around other cats more but he never really cared for their company. Blame my upbringing! he thought. But this one... It seemed like Phi was the first cat in a very long time Dusk was starting to get interested in getting to know.
Just as he was thinking that the elevator arrived with a ding and Dusk filed away the topic for later. "If you don't mind me asking, did you almost call your owner 'Dad' just now?" he asked instead, getting into the elevator.

The Broken Fox wrote:"If you don't mind me asking, did you almost call your owner 'Dad' just now?" he asked instead, getting into the elevator.
Phi was following Dusk onto the elevator when he realized what the other cat had just asked him. He froze in place, his ears started to fold back, and he immediately opened his mouth to respond. Then, just as suddenly, he snapped it shut again. He'd been about to tell Dusk to mind his own business. It was a phrase that he'd used to respond to dozens of questions just like that one in places half way across the country, and it had been all but a knee jerk reaction then. But the words almost seemed stuck in his throat.

Strange as it seemed, he actually wanted to answer Dusk's question.

Well, here goes nothing. Phi took a deep breath and began to speak. "Well... the short answer is yes, I did. It seems kind of weird, but I never knew my actual mom. Henry practically raised me himself, and..." Phi faltered. I can't believe I'm saying all of this out loud. Too late to stop now, though. "He's... kind of been the closest thing to a family I've got, so... he deserves that much, anyway."

I've... I've just told a cat I met less than an hour ago something I'd never told anyone up until this point.

"Nervous?", Crayon asked but the coaster started on it's way down right after he asked.

The ride went fast, so fast the air seemed to be thicker than it should be as it passed by anyone on the roller coaster. Crayon wore a big happy face as the thick breeze stuck him, opening his maw on instinct as though he was riding a car on the interstate.

Aquablast wrote:"I don't know any accidents or designers, but this is too faaaaaast! AHHHHHHHHHH!" Bullet simply screamed loudly as he was dragged by the force of the rotation.
"Really?", Bullet had apparently piqued an interest in Cesium. "I thought dogs liked it fast?", asked Cesium in hopes that it would distract Bullet enough to make him oblivious to the ride for even a short moment.

Yukiko giggled and smiled, "Perhaps a li-AAAAAHHH!!" She screamed along with most of the other riders on the ride as the cart flew forward at its intense speeds, herself latching onto Crayon and wrapping her arms around him in shock. Yukiko was able to slightly calm her screaming, it now turning into a laugh with the occasional shriek at the long drops.

Artemis landed on a branch of a tree near the lake. She tapped impatiently her talon on the wood. "Are you trying to sleep on your feet, useless landwalker? Remember your fur!"

Dusk hit the button for the tenth floor and the doors of the elevator closed. "Oh..." He didn't really know how to respond. It seemed this was an equally sensitive topic for Phi. Shuffling his feet a little, he thought about what to say.
"Henry..." he paused for a second, "Your Dad must be a great guy. Jane's not a bad owner, but she's never been too motherly to me." Dusk's expression turned sad and he looked down at his feet. It was weird to talk about stuff like this with Phi, but at the same time it felt strangely natural. "My brothers and sisters were adopted long before I was. I never really had a family either. Just friends..." his voice trailed off. One friend in particular. The elevator arrived with a soft chime, and the doors opened.

And as for friends... well, I always made one or two wherever Henry had to move. But it was usually only a couple of months before we had to leave, and... well, I never saw most of them again. After a few years I kind of stopped trying." Phi stopped for a moment and gazed uncomfortably off down the hall. He really had no idea why he was saying all of this. These were thoughts that he hadn't put into words since... well, for a long time. He felt like Dusk was someone he could trust, and he could tell that the other cat felt something similar.

But then he remembered the reason they had come up here. "But this can wait. Fishing poles, right?" For the first time that day, Phi smiled. "Featherbutt down there already got a head start."

Artemis studied the placid waters. Hmm, yes, there was abundance of prey...
Without even turning, she said, "I'm hungry. That stupid motorhome made me sick through the whole trip. I suggest you hurry up, foxie: my brother appreciates good hunters and fishers. No better way than a catchful, to impress him--" AHA!
fast like lightning, the buzzard flew off the branch and dived for the water! There was a flurry of feathers, a splash of blue, and a moment later, Artemis came back with a fish in her talons. She landed on the grass and started eating.

Dusk's expression brightened. "That's right pal, we'll show Tweety who's best!" He jogged down the hallway stopping in front of a door with the number '113', then took the key from his collar and opened it. "Uhm, sorry about the mess, we haven't finished unpacking yet." he said with ears folded back, as he gestured for Phi to come in. The door opened to what was the living room. There was a couch to the left with a TV set in front of it as well as a coffee table, a bookshelf was standing in front of the other wall, with a few books and pictures standing on it. To the right, one could see the kitchen and dining area, while to the left, there was a door leading to the other rooms of the apartment. And half a dozen brown cardboard boxes were laying around everywhere, some of them open. "Just wait a second, I'll be right back!" Dusk said, and disappeared through the door to the other rooms.

"You think this is bad? Come over my place in about a week. Henry is many things, but the keeper of a clean dwelling place he ain't." Phi meandered across the room, past a stack of boxes, around the coffee table, and over to a window set in the opposite wall. He rested his arms on the sill and peered out at the park below. Nice view. He looked down towards the pond and just managed to make out a speck of white fluttering nearby a smudge of black. He raised an eyebrow and peered a bit closer. "Well, well, well. Watson, it seems the game is afoot."

Looking at Cesium would burn the image that he was a fox and not a walking fluffball as the wind had now pushed his fluffed fur back which gave him the features one would expect for a fox. Pity, I guess I failed., he thought within his attempts on focusing to blocking out the loud sounds that were, if he should say it, brutalizing his ears.

"Did you say something?" came Dusk's voice from the other room, muffled by the walls. A second later he appeared with two poles and a backpack. The poles were old and worn from use, and one could see they weren't expensive even when they had been bought many years ago. One even had some duct tape to keep it together. On the handle of the poles, in the soft foam were small carvings that looked like they were made with a sharp claw. One was a cat's head, the other a canine shape. Dusk offered the former to Phi. "Come on, lets go!" The snowshoe started towards the door.

After screaming for a while, Bullet got tired and began to pant instead. "Ha... Ha... ... Uhh..." Tired of all the gripping, he simply hanged his hands in the air and decided not to fight it anymore. His whole body loosed up like a jellyfish.

The Broken Fox wrote:"Did you say something?" came Dusk's voice from the other room, muffled by the walls.
"I'll be right there." Phi turned from window, dodged a few boxes, avoided tripping over a few more, and followed Dusk out the door. "Want me to carry any of that for you?"

valerio wrote:That explains a lot, Apollo thought.
Change looked down, trying to appraise the dog from up in his perch.

He could tell that he wasn't actually trying to be mean; at least, as far as his limited knowledge of people face to face let him. He also could tell that he wasn't lying about this 'Dina'; and, for that, Change felt a pang of sympathy. He might not have known her, or trusted others; but there was a still a good heart under all that anxiety. Taking a deep breath, the cat jumped down from his impromptu perch. He still stumbled when he landed, but managed to perpetuate the 'cats always land on their feet' myth.

Change was now pretty close to the dog, something that was making him feel nervous again; this time, however, he felt he could manage it. "'Friend' is not a word to be used lightly." The mixed breed said, fixing his tail so that it was still wrapped around his neck. "We're 'acquaintances'; but 'friends' will have to wait for a while." Of course; that didn't stop him from bringing his hand up to hook his little finger with the dog's.

Apollo felt his heart soar. Just like Dina! This little guy reminded him of her, so wary, so scared, yet so willing to try out one last more time...
The dog nodded. "Good! Acquaintance be it, then. I'll do only my best to meet your expectations, Change... Speaking of which, care to join us for dinner? We live at the end of Sycamore, right there." He pointed toward the mentioned point. "Or I will just leave you to enjoy your book, if you prefer... Anyway," He took a business card out of his collar and handed it to the cat.
The card depicted Apollo, dressed in his 'Anubis' costume, holding an ostrich feather with which he had just written his address, e-mail and telephone numbers. "My cell and my sister's are there as well. Don't hesitate to call anytime, I'll come right away. Kay?"
