I would have linked to Wikipedia instead of WikiFur. Their article is very informative and they're a better encyclopedia anyway.

Sorry.

To sum that all up, I define the furry fandom as a fandom that centers around the artistic value of animals, and the fascination thereof. Fair statement?

That still involves art. A fursuit is a work of art.

It really all depends on how you look at it, many people have different views on the fandom.

There is also writing, a furry writer could make a rather interesting furry-related novel without so much as looking at furry art.

Yes, like the fanfiction. I would say that if someone had a creative interest (such as art, roleplaying, writing and so on) in anthropomorphic animals then it could be argued that the person in question is a furry.

What's the point of this element?

Post by zeroslash »

I'm not too sure. I would call myself a mild furry. With that I mean, I have an interesting in anthropomorphic animals, but I don't like seeing them in romantic situations. I don't mind cheek kissing and embracing, just nothing else. Sorry, I'm one of them. I also prefer them fully clothed, but that's somewhat irrelevant. :x

But I'm still confused as to what the term "furry" means anyway.

dont use anyone elses definition of furry. all it has to mean is an interest in anthromorphic animals. thats the only qualification. if you fit into that group, its a matter of deciding whether you, not anyone else, see yourself as a furry. you dont need to think/feel anything else about furryness.

You don't need to be into furry romance (or worse) to be a furry. It's just about the art (and writing if you don't call that art), really.

For the record, I'm kind of a sucker for well-written furry romance, though there's very little of that online. Bad romance is terrible. I mean what the heck is she even singing? Is that even English? Oh wait, wrong topic. But yeah.

And I don't mind half-dressed or naked characters as long as that's the norm and not some sort of fanservice or worse. Kind of like Housepets! or Donald Duck.

The way I see it, there are three forms of art: art that exhibits human emotion, art that exhibits human sense, and art that exhibits human experience. These fit pretty well into their respective forms of media: music, "high" art (painting, drawing, etc.), and writing. Yes, I know there's a bit of overlap, but for the most part, it applies. Music deals mostly with the emotions people face, pictures and film (I use the term solely to mean time-based media, not actual movies) focus on the senses (though this is usually limited to sight and hearing, maybe touch if you have a good imagination), and writing deals with experiences that humans have. When you begin to combine the two, say, writing and film, you combine experience and senses to make a movie.

I would hardly say that "an interest in anthropomorphic animals" is the only qualification. For example, I have an interest in anthropomorphic animals in a fantasy context because it adds to the story, but I don't consider myself a furry.

You said "qualification". My point is that your qualification may be too vague. There are plenty of people out there who enjoy anthropomorphism and don't consider themselves furry, but for different reasons. I would say that someone who enjoys anthropomorphism because it's dealing with the hypothetical humanization of animals is qualified to be a furry. I would not say that some one who enjoys anthropomorphism because they look cute when their eyes are drawn all sparkly is qualified to be a furry. The focus for the latter isn't the anthro aspect; it's the cute aspect, which is possible in many other areas besides anthro work. However, they're still interested in anthro, for whatever reason, which fits into your qualification, meaning, by your standards, they can be furry, when the reason for that qualification has nothing to do with the qualification.
