Well, I had to stick to a Human gender word because of the lack of a general gender word (like male and female) but yeah, I thought it would be awkward to use a word like that in the context of sentient animals, but I guess that can change.

I thought about it, and "Hembra" sounds kind of awkward, seeing that's the way you talk about unsentient animals.
But I don't know, maybe it could be used...

Finishing the trickiest part so far, with good results! Oh, and about syllabazing, I think I already do it a little bit, but I try to find other ways to save for space. and well, maybe "bueno" wouldn't exactly mean Gay (I'm talking about Mexico, I have no idea about Chile) but in Mexicoi it COULD mean something like "sexy dogs club" or something like that.

That is so true, on of the features I always point out about cats it's that their gender is very difficult to know withous some close examination...

It's really similar, it only gets difficult when using very country-specific words and slang, but other than that I think this is understandable for most people, and believe me i will completely avoid Mexican slang in the translation.

The real challenges I had were with Rufus 'dead' jokes in the farm arc and above all the 'ode to the cat' Peanut recited for his napping friend. But... Grape's gender was reveled much much before that, in the cat-lover ark, so I don't think it's necessary to hide it anymore after that. Oh wait no! ...
