Just so you know, I disagree. (though KizerZin would probably enjoy your writing)
But I think that a friend who is a persona can still be a friend. We are aware that the person on the other end may not be who he claims to be, but if it does not matter who is really on the other side, why can the persona in front of you not be a friend? Especially the ones who don't try to be someone they're not.

Thats nice, you appear to put soul in your speech, evem with a small number of words, it gone nice. I really like to see things like "Meow" in a text of a cat avatar, long "ssss" in a text of a snake avatar, references, bits of philosophy, and other special things wich move the text apart...

Which is what I mean when I say it does not matter who is on the other side. If we never will put ourselves in a place where someone can reach us, we can enjoy the benefits of good company without so much worry.
I too have had one particular incident (not as bad as yours I assume) and now you may note that I do not make any comments which might hint at where I am.
Also, the same could be said about anyone we meet, online or off. I just choose to believe that I will mostly meet genuine people and make exceptions as I go. (Not that I let any people into my confidence much anyway. I don't make deep relationships >_> but that's just because I don't relate well to other people)
