I don't mind Valentines Day, but I think it's overblown. You could probably say that about most holidays, though.
Especially Flag Day.

Fun fact: When I have kits, I am going to do a Martin Luther King, Jr. day gift exchange rather than exchanging gifts on Christmas. I am not going to tell them that this is unusual. I'll just sit back and watch them get confused as they get older.
Other fun fact: I probably shouldn't be allowed to have kits.

That's the problem. It's not a simple holiday, because it's been turned into a massive commercialized affair. Having a special day for relationships is fine; take anniversaries for instance. It's when it's turned into a huge brouhaha that's forced down every couple's throat that it loses its specialness.Psykeout wrote:leaving the complication out of a simple holiday for showing affection.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some 18th of September air pumps to buy for the people I forgot to give a gift to.
Re: Chat Thread XXX: It's Not What You Think
I find sales for things like Memorial Day and Groundhogs Day to be annoying for some reason.
Actually, this was the argument one of my more religious friends used to explain why his particular denomination of Christianity doesn't celebrate holidays. I thought it was as good an explanation as any.RandomGeekNamedBrent wrote:I actually think some people do say that.Psykeout wrote:no one says "pff Christmas is stupid we should be accepting and merry all year round and give each other presents whenever we can"
Then tell them that the sun is about the size of a quarter, and sets in Arizona every night. Also, snow is tree dandruff. You could be like Calvin's dad! Except with a 8.654% chance of being female. =PSleet wrote:Fun fact: When I have kits, I am going to do a Martin Luther King, Jr. day gift exchange rather than exchanging gifts on Christmas. OO OO OO CRAZY THINGS YOU USED TO BELIEVE WHEN YOU WERE A PUP (or whatever) GO
When my mom went out to turn on the car on winter mornings to heat it up, I was REALLY REALLY afraid that it would drive away without us. I had recurring nightmares about it.

I remember thinking it was weird that the other planets were made of the same elements Earth was (there was iron in soil on Mars, etc) They're in outer space, shouldn't they be made of weird, outer-spacey things? For a while, that was kind of disappointing. =P

It's possible technetium can be found on other planets! It's virtually all synthetic here.

How many people know the true meaning of Halloween?

I always thought it represented the day before the day used to celebrate every saint.

Re: Chat Thread XXX: It's Not What You Think
I think that it has a traditional name of All Hallow's Eve, and I have a vague idea that it's a somewhat less superficial holiday than Halloween, although I think calling the origins of something its "true meaning" is a misnomer.

Re: Chat Thread XXX: It's Not What You Think
I don't want to risk breaking the rules by talking about religion, so all I'll say is that as I understand it, it's a combination of a harvest festival and a festival of the dead. Giving out sweets (originally cakes made from the harvest grains) was originally done in exchange for prayers for the dead, and jack-o'-lanterns (made out of harvest vegetables) were meant to recall the souls of the dead as well. Dressing up in scary costumes was either meant to ward off evil spirits and/or to remind people of their existence (hence the "trick" part of "trick or treat").

You WOULD think that, wouldn't you. Kind of.Sleet wrote:I always thought it represented the day before the day used to celebrate every saint.
Indeed. The day before (or eve) All Hallow's day, the day we celebrated all the holy saints or something. This has little correlation to the traditions and beliefs. Like christmas, the date is set to a christian event, but the traditions and meaning is largely pulled from other cultures, namely Paganism. The idea evolved from an idea of scaring away and/or poking fun at the evil spirits (that's where we get trick or treating in costume.) Jack-o-lanterns, (my favorite part) are a Irish tradition, brought over by immigrants. They used turnips or something silly like that, but we have a surprising lack of turnips or something here in america, so they used pumpkins, which proved to work well, so the tradition stuck.CaptainPea wrote:I think that it has a traditional name of All Hallow's Eve
So like most holidays it's just a bunch of things that changed over time.

How dare you reference an extremely well-written game full of quotable lines without going to the default, played-out "the cake is a lie!"
There's a reason little kids dress as ninjas in all black at night sometimes. So we get to celebrate by watching ninjas get hit by cars.

But the ninjas are just kids in disguise. I'm gonna be The Scout for Halloween. I'm gonna yell "Need a dispenser here!" rather than saying "trick or treat."

That or I am just going to dress with a shirt that says "I was going to wear a costume but you've probably never seen it before, it's very obscure."
