Sorrow: Today my cat Jasper collapsed. He was taken to the vet, where it was found out he had a congenital heart disease. We had to put him to sleep.

Sorry if it feels like I'm hijacking this thread, but it's been one of those weeks.

I ran into a neighbor at the Post Office, someone I hadn't seen in six months. BJ's a nifty older lady (81), very spry, funny, and active. Whenever Sophie and i walked the neighborhood, her three little feet always sped up in hopes of finding BJ out working on the lawn. They were big pals. So we did a lot of reminiscing. :) :(

Thanks, trek. Fifteen-sixteen years with a dog imprints you pretty deeply. Sophie was so familiar to so many people - last week it was the Waste Management guys who stopped their big green and yellow truck to talk about her. They always made their curcuit on Tuesday mornings and, after a time, they would stop to talk and give her a biscuit even if we weren't right at a pick-up house. With her bright sheltie expresion and missing left forepaw, Sophie had a way of bringing out the kindness in others. Losses, though, are part of life ...

I can't say too much about bipolar disorder save for the fact that I don't believe I have it.

I DO, however, have times where I don't want to do anything or go anywhere or write anything that could easily be taken as a sign of depression or withdrawal that mimics bipolar. It is, you might say, a similar state of mind.

I would never say you don't have it, H. That would be an absurd statement. But it's believed that it affects no more than three percent of Americans at the moment and shares a lot of characteristics with Stress (which can cause bipolar. That's how close they are to each other.) So there's ninety-seen percent chance you haven't got it, my friend.

The trouble with having so much information at our fingertips is that we'll often look for what's causing a headache and come up with the wrong answer that's a more well known problem that the headache matches a symptom of and go with that. If you want to find out for sure you need to talk with someone. Don't ask the internet. We can support but we don't know the answers without knowing the right questions.

The problem is that my family already has a history with bipolar disorder (my uncle and my mom both have it, or in my uncle's case had it.) I really hope that you're right though and that I don't have it, mental illness isn't some aesthetic or quirk, it's just suffering and I wish I could just make it go away.

Family history is not a small factor in determining inclinations towards various ailments (diabetes, heart and liver diseases, asama, etc.), but real diagnosis requires evaluation by a professional. Hope you can find such help, either for reassurance that you don't have it or treatment options. Very good luck, Harry.

They're over visiting us. They usually come every two years, but couldn't last year because of travel restrictions.
