For some reason I get the feeling the feeling here that while Fox was touched by the gesture and liked it, he doesn't like Mungo in that way and in trying to let him down gently, he put his foot in his mouth and that caused Mungo to cry then accidentally fell the tree.

Or an alternative interpretation here is that Fox does have feelings for Mungo that are REALLY strong but he is unable to express them because he doesn't know how to. That always seemed to be a problem with him.
