New ads being placed on site

This is just a heads up, though I'm sure you've noticed--since Project Wonderful went away I've been wondering what I was gonna do re: setting up adspace, and I was approached by Hiveworks who do advertising setups for comics like Cyanide and Happiness and Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, and I figured that was legit enough. As it is, though, this is still a trial run. Cross fingers, I don't expect the extent of problems that came with Google AdSense.

As always, I am not going to berate you or anyone if you run an adblocker. I do myself. Even so, I'm doing my best to make sure the ads places are as non-intrusive or denegrating to the browsing experience as I can make them. If you ever have an issues with the advertisements, please report them or notify me or the moderation staff right away (so they can notify me).

You don't have to worry about it Rick. I don't use any ad blockers so it should be fine for me. In the meantime, good luck with this and I hope it works out well for you!

You do need to keep an eye on it though. I know that, on the strip called wildelifecomic (it's an occasional horror webcomic so not use the direct link in case it's NSFW when clicked on) the creator (Pascalle Lepas) had to protest to the company when ads began covering the strip itself on some browsers.

as long as the adds don't collect/track ANYTHING i'm fine with them.

Funny you should mention that. On Housepets! strips now there will be an ad pinned (as in it doesn't move relative to my screen when I scroll) to the right side of the window (but shifted slightly down). On my aspect ratio, it covers up the right side of the comic except the top right corner. With scrolling it's possible to veiw the whole strip, but not all at once and it's tedious. Here is what I'm seeing.

oh, they're THAT kind of ad. that's different. Page embedded only please, no pinned headers footers or sidebars.

Is it possible to exit out of it for you? I know with my ads that I get there is a big "close" button which I can click on and it causes the ad to completely disappear.

Access to the new strip's title and direct link are also gone from the home page.

I turn off my adblocker for this domain and I don't have a problem with ads being run here. The pinned ad on the right of the screen is a bit of a nuisance, though.

I didn't realize the close button would be invisible on smaller windows. I've turned off the fixed positioning so you should be able to reach the close button. (It'll close the ad for three days or on browser refresh)

The comic title on the homepage was actually a bug from one of the recent wordpress updates; it caused the title to appear MULTIPLE time instead so I swapped out to a different format for the time being so it didn't look quite so awful, if I can ever figure out how to fix that bug again...

I'm fone with the ads, but the ones I'm getting are definitely not in line with the comics rating...

Character Tags on the Main Page

I've noticed on the main page, the title and character tags are now gone. If you navigate to the current comic itself from the archive or via the < [] > arrows, they'll be there, but on the page it's now gone.

The character tags haven't been on the main page since the site upgrade, but the rest is definitely new

When the comics first are posted on the site, the only way that I can get the tags up initially is by going back and then going forward with the arrows. After a while, the tags for me remain.

Click on the title below the comic. It's how I get the links for the threads.

Update: And I take it back.

Ads are gone if you return to main page and then go back. Same with tags. Tolerable so far.

So far I haven't even been noticing the ads either or been bothered by them. Hope that it stays like that.

Yeah, life's just full of little inconveniences ... so here's another one. Price we pay to enjoy Rick's work, I guess.

Except I don't have to pay a price since it is no inconvenience to me. Seriously there is a HUGE close button on the ads for me (not sure if this is the same for anybody else). All I do is press it and it doesn't come back unless I refresh the page then all I have to do is press close again.

The placement of the ads ruins the format and removes all mobile friendliness it had left. The only ad placement I can understand being there is the one just below the red bar that contains links.

It looks pretty okay for me on mobile.

Geez, Render, charge your phone before you post something like that! It gives me anxiety just looking at such a low battery!! :)

Adds haven't been an issue for me up to now. Just keep them unobtrusive and it doesn't bother me. Thanks for the great content!

Still haven't had any problems on my end either and I just got back from zipping across 4 states. I actually had more problems with the Wi-Fi then the site. LOL

No worries, there's power left for a few hours when I'm not doing too much with it. Anway, it was 01:17 and I was on the way to bed anyway, and the phone on it's way to the charger.

I assume that at the time of that posting then that your phone has now been taken care of and is back to being healthy and now fully charges? :P

It's presently fine at 34% at 23:11. ^^

And I think we've spoken enough about my phone's battery now.

Just as long as it has made it out of the woods and it is gonna be OK, we are fine with everything.

Anyway, still no problems with me regarding ads on my end.

Leaving the main page open for too long while the ads are there causes a redirect.

I've noticed it too. It's one of those things that tells you you've won a bunch of money courtesy of Samsung and junk like that. Obvious scam. It only happens on the comic page, so I assume it's related to the ads.

Huh. That is strange because it never has happened to me ever. I'll keep on the lookout for it.

Hey everyone, we take ad redirects very seriously around here, so we want to know if it happens to you.
First and foremost, keep safe and don't click on anything if you're redirected. But we would like some information so we can report the problem. Please let us know when you were redirected, where you were sent (but please break the URL so it doesn't make a link: www. example .com), and a screenshot if you can. If you're concerned about hanging around on a malicious site long enough to get this info, then just tell us whatever you can.
Above all: Please let us know! We want to take care of this problem as well as get a sense of how big a problem it is. Thank you all for your help

Why is it important to break the URL up? Can the people who run the site that you get redirected to send things through the forum if we post the actual unbroken link?

If you post an unbroken link, people could click on it and go to the virus site if they aren't paying attention. Best to not take the chance by having what is basically the equivalent of a live grenade in your comment.

Disarm the bomb before you show it to people so people don't accidentally set it off. Kind of like that.

Well, now that we've had a couple of months to get used to the pop-up ads ………. they stink.
