I’ll be honest it looked liked a story book even before I read the text.

Don’t worry Max we all break into spontaneous rhyme at times.

I know it’s a looney tunes reference, but should we unofficially call the coyote Sam for now? Also, looks like King wasn’t the first to realize shovels make very effective tools to defend yourself with

Is it just me, or does Rufus look a bit old here?

How was Max able to out run them for so long? It looks like Rufus had a brown collar before the green one he had Down at the Farm. Maybe Reuben gave him the green one after his previous owner "went to a better place". Do you think this is far enough back that we might see his old owner?

On the run for my little life,
racing over fields and dales.
Getting in a little strrife;
counting up my fails.
Pursued by a big ol’ mutt
and a crow of doom;
I was in a right ol’ rut,
my end was on the loom.
Then I found him there,
armed with just a spade.
I saw him shift, just a hair
and make a move well played.

The reference is to looney tunes I believe. You never see the ones where Wil. E. Coyote tries to steal sheep from a sheep dog? Forget if he or the dog was referred to as Sam in those ones
Edit: did a little Wikipedia, and apparently despite looking nearly identical, the coyote in those cartoons was actually called Ralph Wolf, the dog was Sam apparently

If your in two strips and get hit by a shovel then you deserve your own name. :P

That was actually really close to being a haiku

And I ran, I ran (5)
So far away I just ran (7)
I ran all night and day (6) :(

Shame they’re a coyote and not a wolf, missed opportunity to not make that uncle deadeye with how similar s/he looks to the wolves. I do agree though, they likely will get a name after that interaction with Rufus

Oooh, “mornin Sam” I remember that now. I originally thought ithe alt text was a Dr Seuss thing like “Green eggs and Ham”

Now that you brought it up I wanted to ask about the she / he thing. I think it’s a she because of the small marking around the eye. Kind of like an eyelash of sorts. Only the female characters seem to have similar markings.

One-handed shovel strike. The mark of a master.

And love that reference, it's an enjoyable song!

Grape’s existence alone means you can never assume unless Rick is doing a fanservice arc, though they do remind me of one of the female wolves. Wouldn’t mind if Rick gets a little unoriginal and names her Bonnie... you have one guess on what I think the Crow will be named if I’m right

Rufus is an Australian Shepard like Kade. I didn’t notice that until now. I just kept thinking Rufus’s fur looks really familiar.

“And you couldn’t get away?” The fact that Peanut asked that makes me love him.

Not sure how much that coyote's gonna be interacting with anybody after that collision.... Used to really love those Sam and Ralph cartoons. Still do.

Is it just me, or is something unusual about Coyote's right knee in the last panel. It looks like the "WANG" is clipping through her leg.

Oh man. That's a blast from the past. I'd ask how you people could connect that so fast, but I'm guilty of that for other strips. Anyway, now that I know what's being reference I can participate in the discussion proper.

The narrative of the songs is he's running away because he "meet a girl... with auburn hair and tawny eyes" so if the coyote is female she would reference the song as well as the cartoon.

Does anyone else notice that Rufus looks to be the same age as Peanut is currently?

I just thought it was an interesting detail.

If the coyote does end up with the name Sam, that means these last two pages focused on Sam and Max.

I'm ten years or so older than Rick. I don't get why he makes all the eighties references, but I'm not complaining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIpfWORQWhU

He's a cattle-dog. His fur's naturally grey.

What are the odds that Rufus and Coyote Sam have a history? I think it’s pretty suspicious that Rufus happen to be waiting right there with a shovel. Cartoon reference aside it strikes me as too inconvenient. I have a feeling this isn’t the last we see of Coyote Sam.

Oh, jeez, that alt-text flew over my head until the fans pointed out and that was one of my favorite Looney Tune shorts. D:

"Morning, Ralph."
"Morning, Sam."

"Good day/night, Ralph."
"good day/night, Sam"

Some folks think this is a 'love song'.....it's actually about an alien (UFO) abduction. THAT's what he's running away from.

Think of the lines, "The cloud is moving nearer still, Aurora Borialis comes in view", and then later, "Reached out a hand to touch your face that's slowly disappearing from my view", followed by, "Reached out a hand to try again, I'm floating in a beam of light with you."

If that isn't an allegory for being 'beamed up' I don't know what is.

Either way, I love the song. Played it once at a music store on a KORG 'Triton Pro-X' keyboard and not only had a group gather around, but they were singing the lyrics as I played it.

Impromptu jam sessions in music stores are such a hoot. 8-) 8-)

And I most definitely got the "Sam & Ralph" ref.......luvvit!!

She/he does seem mildly younger than Rufus. If they are still alive, they’d be pretty old most likely considering Rufus was up there in years

If he survives that concussion, that coyote's gonna have a seriously bent schnoze. However, we know get a glimpse of what Rufus did on the farm t earn his keep besides dispensing cryptic advice and make word plays. The lad's pretty good with a blade. (In All Quiet on the Western Front shovels - entrenching tools, if you like - were often the hand-to-hand weapon of last resort.)
