Lovely morning, went out for a run, going to try and be a little less highly strung this year though it does seem to be my natural state, New Year, New Deer :-)

Finally got back to writing some music today after more than two weeks without free time... and I just don't wanna stop, but at this point the song's definitely finished :D
Maybe I'll try and write another one over the weekend.

Thanks, Fox. The weather in LA was good most of our stay, and we had a good time. Son, Daughter, and their spouses (no grands) along with assorted woofers. Did get down to the San Diego Zoo, always like to see the okapis. I was twelve the first time I ever saw one. At that time, Ihad no idea there such a creature existed so seeing them was a genuine "discovery" for me, and they have enchanted me ever since. Did lots of little fun things and the travel back wasn't too bad (a little snow coming down as we landed at Manchester NH). Now to the businesses of 2023, eh.

Hey, I'll probably be going there later in the year, I'm planning a trip to California in early March.
Going to have to see the one in San Francisco as well, there's a snow leopard in there who I used to know very well.

Well, then, ENJOY! Have not been to the SanFran zoo but hear good things about it.
I get into the occasional back-and-forth with other animal advocates about zoos, and I understand their arguments. However, zoos strike me as a valuable antidote to our national (USA) nature/animal deprivation syndrome, especially for children. There's just something magical/mystical and enchanting about seeing living creatures that no media can duplicate. In that context, though, I do wish the admissions were much less expensive.
Have a good time, Fox.

Yeah, I think there's nothing that will motivate people to conserve nature better than getting to see the parts of it that would normally be hidden from them.
And to take it even further, it puts the consequences of human activity into the starkest possible light by showing us what we could lose. As a species we already have enough trouble curbing our destructivity when we can see that reminder right there in front of us, I don't want to think of how much worse it might be if we never did.

For me, since I made the local one my regular study spot for the winter term (when it was quiet) back when I was in university, I got to form real relationships with some of the animals who would see me every time, and I still go back there pretty often to keep those up.

"Are you determined to kill all the animals? If you do, your loneliness will be beyond endurance." An unknown native-american chieftain, Blackfoot I think, to a group of railroad hunters circa 1880.

Time to get the Htundai to the garage for alignment check. They're kinda slow but they have some magazines about how to attract wild birds which I enjoy reading. My neighbors, Brody's "mom" and "dad" (Sophie's scottie pal from the "Waggy Tails Fence Club") have all kinds of stuff, and they get many different song birds. They occasionally get crows, too, but there's a Cooper's Hawk that hangs around the song birds, and the crows chase him away. Entertainment is where you find it, eh?

Had to do a bunch of shopping. Kinda interesting how many of our department stores are getting a little shabby - dirty floors, unstocked shelves, fewer cashiers along with automatic check out machines that malfunction.

Reminds me of the long, slow demise of the once popular K-Mart stores. Things got so bad there the missus started saying, "Now I only go to K-Mart to remind myself why I never go to K-Mart."
