Well, I of course meant using it in regular conversation. In a technical setting such as math or science class, I advocate it. But using it when talking casually to people is very jerkish. However, Your science teacher IS, in fact, a science teacher, so he/she is either a jerk or an awesome person anyway.Mettlebird wrote:...wait so my science teacher is therefore a jerk?Psykeout wrote:not when that "friend" is a big metric system using jerk.

Re: Chat Thread XXX: It's Not What You Think
There are plenty of places the metric system is more convenient and would be used conversationally, even in a place operating on imperial measurements. There's a reason our rulers have centimeters on them, ya know.
Regardless, I don't think there's a very convenient imperial counterpart to the kilogram.
I think the temperature difference is the only thing that bothers me, because I have no sense of perspective when looking in terms of Celsius. All I know is that water freezes at 0.

Let it be known that I love the metric system. Once you get used to the units, it just makes much more sense than our system based around the length of King Henry's foot. But I am still a bit hazy on temperature ... Lessee, 30 degrees C would be around room temperature, right?

Room temperature is typically about 20 degrees Celsius.
Celsius, unlike other metric units, is only marginally better than its Imperial counterpart. It's not really a big deal.

Well the Fahrenheit scale is in fact more accurite because it has more units between freezing and boiling. Fahrenheit got 0 when he combined salt, water, and ice to make the coldest thing he could, and called that 0, freezing fell into 32, and 212 is boiling. Also, 451 is when books will burn. Celsius on the other hand called frozen water 0 and boiling water 100 to make it an easy to use system.Sleet wrote:Celsius, unlike other metric units, is only marginally better than its Imperial counterpart. I say we throw out the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales and measure temperatures exclusively in Kelvins.
It'll be so convenient.

You can always use decimal places though. Really the "best" is Kelvin, but the numbers are so large that it's not really practical. The Grey Wolverine wrote:Well the Fahrenheit scale is in fact more accurite because it has more units between freezing and boiling. Well, when it comes down to it, Planck units are the "best," but they're completely unusable in practical situations.

I have no idea, I can't say I'm terribly knowledgeable of the various scales used to measure temperature.

Re: Chat Thread XXX: It's Not What You Think
I consider "better" the ones that require the least hoops to be jumped through to actually use in calculations.
If no systems of measurements existed, and I was tasked to make one up, I'd use this one:
Sleetlength: 1.616 cm or .636 inches (100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Planck lengths)
Sleetmass:217.6g or .479 pounds (10,000,000 Planck masses)
Sleettime: .539 seconds (10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Planck times)
Sleetcharge: 1.875 mC (1,000,000,000,000,000 Planck charges)
Sleettemperature: .1417 degrees Celsius or .255 degrees Farenheit (one 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000th of a Planck temperature)
The names are a work in progress. *giggles*

Hi
I was wondering, would it be alright to copy an image from the webcomic for an avatar or not?
I wanted to have an avatar, but since I am an horrendous drewer and I lack the means to get the image onto the computer (scanning equipment and the like) I wondered whether I could do this instead. Or perhaps I could ask Rick if he would make me an avatar, would he do that? I just want to make sure I would not be doing anything wrong...or illegal for that matter (copy right law). I thought it best to ask before I did anything and in a place many members (and moderators) would be able to tell me whether I can do it or not.
It has been a full year, last wednesday, since I have been a member of Houspets!

Does it count as a system of measurement to measure things relative to any other measures or distances? If so, "arm's reach" is within a system of measurement.Psykeout wrote:I hate all systems of measurement.
