I don't really identify as a dog or anyting like that. I just like Corgis and figured it'd be fun to be a bit different and not pick a fox or wolf or some other really common fursona.

I find cat fursona being little hard to find than Dog, Wolf, Fox fursona.

I agree, I find that the majority of furry artwork is canine. However, feline art is more common than even rarer animals such as deer for example :)

As much as I love individuality, I settled on my fursona due to prior knowledge drawing canines

Canids are the most popular but cats are right after that.

YAY!!! That means I chose well!!!

I've always been a cat person, so that's why I wanted Seth to be a cat. He was originally going to be black, but gray was easier to color :P

My sentiments exactly.

I think it's just being silly, though. Trying to parody that famous picture, yaknow?

I'm sorry, but I'm just not a furry. It's just something that I'm not.
I'm not worried about my image or the rest of the fandom, it's just who I am.

And that's completely fine! There's no requirement to be a fur, obviously. Except for instances in which the individual is clearly joking, we do not allow "conversion" or "recruitment." Such things are flat-out creepy.

I was wanting to know if anyone could help me pick out a present for a friend of mine. My friend is a furry, her fursona is a tauran from WoW. Is there a good present that I could give her that relates to the furry fandom, or should I just get her something from WoW instead? By the way I am not a furry, and all I know about the fandom is from this forum, and from a documentary that painted them in a positive light on YouTube.

I dunno, something tauren-related from WoW would be pretty good.

They just like furry stuff. Looking at art, playing video games, watching TV/movies, et cetera. Just like any media-based fandom.

And of course a cat can be a fursona!

Non of my friends and family but my younger brother knows that I'm furry, he doesn't know what furry is but he only knows I have OC and like to dress and act like him. I'm. Really looking forward to be part of local furry community but I think it's going to be awkward to tell my parents where I'm going... I have hinted my mom that I want to hang around with someone who is intrested in animals and act like one. But she just took it as a joke.

There are unfortunately many situations where you should not mention it. I guess it depends on how avid you are in it and how your parents are like. I like to consider myself a furry, but I really don't do anything to show it. All my parents know is that I like cute small animals and that's all they care to know.

I'm gonna be honest, there's not really a massive point to coming out with this. It's not really massively different from saying: "I'm interested in chess.".

Oh, there's 1 massive tip. Don't make it a big thing. If you have to say anything, don't make it seem like some life changing aspect. "Hey Mum, I'm going out tomorrow to a convention thing, hope you don't need me.". That is really all you need to say if you fancy heading to meet others at a fur con or whatever it's called. I suggest having some sort of IRL friend with you that you trust with you though. Depends on your age really. I'm 17 and my Mum still hates me going to a social gathering unless I have a friend there. If you do have a friend going with you, I imagine your Mum would be fine so long as you don't decide to tell her what this place is publicly known for. Chances are, everyone who doesn't spend a good few hours each day on the internet doesn't even know what a furry is, nor care what they are known for.

You know, when I read the title, I thought this would be something entirely different...

But I do have one tip, just be honest about it. Parents, friends and other people generally get suspicious about you if you act strangely, which would mean they suddenly jump to the worst possible conclusion. During the time I first joined Housepets, and by extension the furry fandom, I became very secretive about it and my mother thought I was doing drugs! She could not have been more wrong. So, for the sake of your parents mental stability, just be honest about what you are up to and they would not care as long as you give them no cause to worry.

Of course, my mother is generally more liberal than most, other parents might be more conformative or controlling.

@ Aaron - By the way, believe it or not but some parents would be horrified if their kid suddenly developed an interest in chess. Some people see very little value in interests that are not their own.

Please, never call telling people you're a furry "coming out." It's awkward, gives the wrong idea, and many members of another group of people find it offensive. I know I do.

My tip for telling people you're a furry is you don't. Just don't hide what you like. If you like animals, don't hide it. If you like cartoons, don't hide it. If someone puts two and two together and asks if you're a furry, don't be afraid to say "yes." But having a big to-do about confessing your participation in the furry fandom just makes people think it's a bigger deal than it really is. It's not a big deal at all.

Also, they're called "threads," not "boards."
