Pitchpipe chivvied Scruff into taking the lead as they trudged down the road until they reached a locked gate with a sign. She waited for Scruff to puzzle it out:

Richardson Valley Zoological Gardens and Arboretum

Employees and deliveries only.

All others use main entrance.

A lot of fine print about who approved the sign and
whose donation paid for it and stuff like that.

Scruff looked up at the sign and squinted as he put a dirty claw tip in his mouth. He knew the first words were the same as the town name and the third had the word 'zoo' in it but... "I think it says this gate only let's in those who live here? See? De-live-ries?". He pointed to the word. " Others go to the main gate. I think that'll be by a road, Auntie."

The big bunny shrugged and headed back to the road.

Scruff grinned a broke tooth grin. "Yeah! We goin' in? Reckon we can get through the gates?". He nodded to the gaps.

Pitchpipe ruffled the coon between his ears, then sniffed her paw and rubbed it surreptitiously against the weeds beside the road.

"No thanks, sugar, I just wanted to know where it was. You can try if you like, but I'm headin' the other way. Back toward the edge of town where the local scavengers are."

So saying she scrambled up to the edge of the road and darted across during the first gap in traffic.

"Oh," Scruff said helplessly as Pitchpipe headed off. Then he set to looking at the lock to see if he could pick it or if he needed to climb over.

Having found the lock kinda unpickable without power tools, Scruff slipped through the bars instead and had a peek in the nearest bin for anything foodlike to eat.

"It's OK, Alpha," David said, standing up. "Come on, m friend." He stopped by a closet and got some sheets out before taking Alphabites to one of the bedrooms where a mattress lay on the floor. He put the sheets on the mattress. "I'll sort out a proper bed for you tomorrow, Alpha, ok?"

After returning to the main room, he took a few more sheets and made up the other mattress in the second of the three bedrooms. "It may not be much - tonight -," he told Selene, "but it was designed for me and we should be able to keep warm tonight." He sat on the mattress and invited Selene to join him.

Scruff sat and listened to a quiet he'd rarely heard. Only a few shows from the televisions in some of the compounds spoiled things. Ah, well.

It's not that i'm backing out or anything, just worried that we might be making things worse for us..
We basically are talking about you running away from your owners..

"Muinmos eclud , David" Selene muttered quietly , with a smile on her muzzle , as she drifted into dreamland , within David's embrace

(translation : "sweet dream , David" , that was in Selene's mother tongue , while sleepy she meant to say it in english but accidentally slipped up and not realizing the mistake)

Alphabites laid down on the bed, putting his board next to him as a habit. It was his first time on a mattress, it was different, something he could get used to. He quickly drifted off to sleep after this long day.

Scruff looked up at a sign as he passed it. "Po...polar B...bears" he said, looking at the pointy bit on the sign. He decided to go the other way. Towards the big Cats. He'd seen cats before. They weren't that big.

Morning crept in under nights' defenses and the sun began pulling itself up my its' fingers as Scum found himself a bush to sleep behind and argued himself to a light sleep near the insect house at the zoo.

David, meanwhile, felt warm and, as he drifted up to a state of wakefulness, he wondered why that was. He remembered a second or so before he opened his eye. He was still pressed up against a beautiful Arctic Vixen called Selene. It was why his muzzle felt trapped too. Hers was atop his, warming his face with her breath. He felt he'd rather cut the muzzle off than disturb her right now but... He slightly opened his mouth and gave her a little lick on her cheek.

Yukon opens his eyes, squinting into the sun pouring itself in through his window. He kicks his feet off of the couch and stretches, standing up to go make some breakfast or something.

Rosal jerked awake as his alarm clock went off. He fell to the floor and flipped the switch on the side to turn it off after a short crawl from his bed. Taking a deep breath he straightened up and stepped into the washroom, picked up a bottle of fur dye and stopped. He looked at the bottle groggily before replacing the bottle with one of fur dye remover and stepped into the shower.

Alphabites woke up hugging his board, he never knew when in the night that would happen, but it always made him feel safer. The mattress was still comfortable, so he continued to lay there hugging his board. He wondered if he should get up, but decided that he could get up when he knew David and Selene were up... No need to be a bother.

Cinnamon, meanwhile, is trudging along behind the food cart through the private back-alleys of the zoo, trying to take notes on all the rules and exceptions he was suddenly expected to remember.

"But Mister Bu... I mean Frank I'm sorry but Dad trained me to talk proper to humans because some humans... yes Mister Frank, I'm paying attention. Mister Frank, isn't this all written down already?"

"Kid, if you spend all your time reading and writing you'll never learn how to handle these animals. You have to learn it in your heart, kid, you have to be ready for everything. These aren't simple woodland critters like you, kid, these are killers from the wilds of Canada and the African plains. They'll have you bleeding out before you know you're dead if you stop and make notes in this cage."

"Um, yes sir, I'm sorry sir, I'll pay attention!"

"Good man, I mean weasel. Now I want you to take this packet of meat and take it into cage seventeen. Don't worry about Hiawatha, she sleeps in. Just put it in her fridge and don't make too much noise."

"Yes sir, what kind of animal is she?"

"Wolverine, she's not more than twice your size, but I'd rather go up against a grizzly. Wolverines are..."

"Yes sir, I know all about wolverines! I'll be careful sir!"

Frank quickly opened the door and locked it again behind the little animal, letting his face break into a broad grin. Hiawatha was actually an early riser, but she probably wouldn't rough the kid up too much. Cinnamon, or "Six Toes" as he styled himself, was just so fresh and innocent he couldn't help hazing him a little.

Funny, it was awful quiet in there. The kid ought to have made a sound when the beast surprised him.

He was definitely taking too long.

Frank opened a closet and grabbed a tranq gun, then reached down to the door handle... and it opened and a completely un-mauled pine marten came out.

"Boy, you were wrong, Mister Burns! She was already up, and she wasn't mean at all! And so pretty..."

Frank quickly slid the tranquilliser gun back into storage, and followed Cinnamon on to the next delivery.
