Re: Chat Thread 35: If It Doesn't Exist, Then It Will Be Mad
99% of rappers who use purposeful censorship to make their songs "classy" do it badly. Usually to the point of detracting from the flow of the song.
That said, I don't listen to rap much at all. It's just not my thing. But when I do, I mostly listen to Eminem. And while he does use profanity in most of his songs, there are few people who would actually contend that he doesn't have a strong vocabulary regardless.

like I said quality of artist not use of profanity determines if a song is in bad taste or not.
Well to be fair everyone does that.Sleet wrote:I listen to music looking for what it should be, rather than just accepting what I'm given.
You just happen to have a different idea of what music should be.

I'm just saying swearing does not improve rap music, and most of the time it's done out of lack of vocabulary or attempts to be edgy rather than artistic vision.

I think we can both agree that prfanity for the sake of profanity adds little to music.Sleet wrote:I'm just saying swearing does not improve rap music, and most of the time it's done out of lack of vocabulary or attempts to be edgy rather than artistic vision.
But to dismiss music because it is profane is silly.

Shock rock if done with irony can be good. <3 Steel Panther.
Music isn't automatically bad if there's swearing, but there's far fewer places where swearing belongs than places where it's used.

By writing a rap (without the use of profanity of any kind) about the intrinsically positive effects of hearing the word "Jabroni" spoken or sung.Psykeout wrote:HOW CAN I DESCRIBE MY HAPPY FEELS

Ya know, in a subject that is so heavily based upon opinions and individual taste, you sure do seem to "know" a lot about how it's "supposed" to be.there's far fewer places where swearing belongs than places where it's used.
No offense, but trying to tell someone that their taste in music if flawed, no matter how solid your reasoning seems, is good for nothing but starting flame wars and hurting others feelings unnecessarily. :/

I'm just saying. Considering how often I've been called out for crossing the line between sharing opinions and pushing them on people, I think it's a bit hypocritical for Sleet to be doing the same. I'm not saying that she's purposely trying to belittle others opinions, but I do feel that the way he's been wording zir replies could easily be construed as such.

Re: Chat Thread 35: If It Doesn't Exist, Then It Will Be Mad
Rap which had humble, viable roots expressing one's less then pleased viewpoint with ongoing events has devolved into sheer, mind numbing idiocy which has made a select few people, mostly people of color, disgustingly rich by people of lower income brackets who cheerfully throw their limited income at these people because they speak of things the poor folks agree with. It is a scam and a half and yet shows no sign of slowing.
Re: Chat Thread 35: If It Doesn't Exist, Then It Will Be Mad
Sounds like the music industry as a whole. The idea of paying a person (and the people who "represent" them) for the songs they sing is a relatively new concept, and one that hardly does the lower end of the financial spectrum any good.

Most glam-hop disgusts me. Glorifying crime is bad enough when it's sung from a poor perspective, but when you're flaunting how rich you are and still glorify crime, that's even worse.
Of course it's not all about this, but the trend still is icky.

Okay, I'm gonna side with KJ here. this discussion seems to be heading in a direction not appropriate to the forums, so I'm going to stop this.
that said, can we agree that rappers who just tack profanity onto their lines after the words that rhyme (horrible ex: you can't put me on a leash, mother******. I'm gonna go bake a tasty quiche, mother******) are not using profanity in a constructive and creative way, or is this opinion also challenged?

Nope. That particular usage of profanity is one of the primary reasons I avoided rap entirely for a very long time. It's only recently I discovered that some rappers consistently *don't* do that.

I don't listen to rap so I can't really cover that angle, but I will say that if you replace profanity with a censor-friendly word like "idiot", you can see how overusing it will make you look silly. If I was using the word "idiot" several times in all of my songs, I'd either be a comedian with a gimmick or very hard to take seriously.

Most of the really talented rappers you see swear a lot less than the popular ones. Not because they refuse to swear, but because they have better rhymes to be making than trigger/African-American gentleman.

Edit: Ok how come my filter isn't picking this up like it's picking up sleet's

It's not a filter. I'm just not stupid enough to actually say the word.

Today in French we had to write a happier ending to Little Red Riding Hood (the one we were provided was a version where the grandmother and Little Red get eaten and that's the end). My ending had the wolf go to the supermarket, where the cashier said "Sir, you're a wolf". This made him so embarrassed that he exploded and Little Red and her grandmother were saved.

I would've written it that Little Red Riding Hood was actually bringing her grandmother enriched uranium for use in her terrorist nuclear program, and the wolf is actually a good guy.

I feel as though the whole ganster rap thing has gone from a way to make a social commentary (say what you will about groups like public enemy and NWA you can't argue they were trying to make a statement) to just being an exercise in ego inflating.
