That's what i mean. On the whole, most people I've found when you drop preconceived opinions of then and give them an unbiased chance, are just as nice as anyone else. I've personally never had a problem with furries and have mentioned previously that i do have an appreciation for the art though have never been that involved in the fandom.

We always welcome new furries but it's not like we're trying to convert humans. People will join the fandom if they want to! :3

I'm not that good at singing... But foxes make some weird noises, so that makes sense.

Wouldn't it be weird if most wolf furries are good vocalists?

Anyways, more onto the topic, fox sounds in the wild do sound weirdly scary since it's a mix of high pitched welps and yelps, though if I remember they do bark as well....

The fandom isn't really about animals unless they're being anthropomorphized in some way. If you want to make an animals thread you're welcome to!

That's one thing I've wondered about, when does it exit the definition of being "furry" and becoming more animal? I've asked before to another person and the best i can figure is its just based on your own view of it.

Any degree of Anthropomorphism on Animals or any degree of Zoomorphism on Humans can be called a part of the furry fandom.

So to answer your question, it exits being furry when the animal is simply an animal. No human speech or anything. clothing could be an exemption.

That's a great explanation, Hyper.

And aren't animals that are anthropomorphisized but still quadruped called "Feral"? I've heard that term before.

In the fandom, yes, I believe so.

Though that's also the term used to describe any and all real life animals that started off domesticated which, for one reason or another, are no longer domestic.

Within the fandom, the term feral does indeed refer to pure animals. This is because highly-anthropomorphized animals substitute for "humans" in the idealized society of furries, thus wild (roughly unevolved) animals are designated as feral. However, there is also such thing as "feral form" where the character is drawn out in a pure animal form, but may posses anthropomorphic intelligence.

Feral actually only refers to wild animals. What KJ said.

I like these designations, myself:
Astolpho wrote:In the story universe I'm putting together for The Dawn Chapel (which I'll call the Empyrean, going forward), I wanted to allow for a wide variety of intelligent animal characters that are both humanoid and nonhumanoid, as well as for normal, nonhumanoid animals. And in my mind, it seems like in a culture where you could have a humanoid talking dog, and a talking dog that goes about on all fours, and a dog that is totally normal and does not talk, and has only animal intelligence, there'd be a vocabulary in place that allows for these distinctions.

In the furry world the words I tend to see most often are 'anthro' and 'feral', but I'm not a fan of them myself, and I think that it would be sort of lazy to adopt them into my own stories.

So after a bit of brainstorming I hit upon the idea to adopt language from heraldry. The poses, or 'attitudes' that an animal has on a coat of arms each have their own specific names, and so in the culture of the Empyrean, you'll sometimes see people describing animal characters with these words:

In heraldry, an animal 'salient' is rearing up on two legs, and in the Empyrean, a salient animal is humanoid, or 'anthro'. Hower is a salient german shepherd, Kass is a salient salamander, Pedro's a salient opossum, etc.

An animal 'statant' is standing on all fours, or with one paw raised. A statant animal in the Empyrean is nonhumanoid (or nonanthro), but still in possession of a human intellect, capable of speech, etc. Often, statant animals are a bit bigger than their normal nonsapient counterparts. Astolpho, when I draw him as an adult, is a statant lion.

Finally, an animal 'couchant' is lying on its belly. And in the Empyrean, couchant animals are unintelligent, plain old normal animals.
I've asked him and he has no problems whatsoever with someone else using these.

That actually clears it up pretty well. Thanks!

As was mentioned above, feral was what I was referring to though didn't know that to be the proper term for it.

I use three terms, since the "furrie" creatures are just scientific creations, I have three designations, Abominations are people mixed with more than one type of animal, this leads to rapid mental degeneration and eventually death, Hybrids is what I prefer over anthros since these were made with people messing with human genetics, and ferals were once hybrids, but when they woke up they were unable to cope with the fact that someone had played with their genetic structure like a guitar, and went insane, acting like animals. Just my personal preference, with my current stories I just use hybrids though, the ferals and abominations are from a story I never really got around to finishing, and have since lost.

That works pretty well for particular story worlds, but not so much as general terminology. Because in some people's RP universes, anthros/salient/hybrids/what-have-you aren't just humans that've been tampered with, scientifically. For a lot of people, they're just as normal as a human is in our universe.

An interesting take on it, nonetheless. :)
