[2020/05/15 - I Can Show You The Jurassic World]
Title Text: Grape's playin' something on a Laserdisc. Everything is better on Laserdisc. Whatever happened to the Laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Ah, the Laserdisc. The epitome of human technology. I'm sure it'll be as prevalent as the Betamax, if not more!

Disclaimer: I barely know anything about the Betamax, but I do understand that it did have quite the useage.

The first video I ever rented was on Betamax. It was "Raise the Titanic" Sadly, I didn't know the difference and we had a VHS player.

I'm surprised Grape found a laser disc. Either Earl is a collector or she spray painted one of his old records.

Old technology explains the strategy
but nothing outweighs the stupidity;
casting a T-Rex, for vanity’s sake
and wondering why the ground will quake…
Old fashioned ethos sings it’s song today,
aged logic and technology hold sway.
The lesson now comes in an old format -
that of the disc held by the Hammond cat.
Perhaps it will tell of the Amber fly
from which info was taken by some guy?
I wonder how Peanut would have drawn that?
It’s a secret he’ll keep under his hat.

For those who didn't grow up in the early 2000s the alt-text is clearly referencing this: http://homestarrunner.com/sbemail135.html

Well, Grape, being kinda prehistoric myself, I'm proud of your resourcefulness ... you don't have a goat, too, do you?

I remember LaserDiscs. My brother wanted a player but my parents thought the price was too high. This arc continues to entertain, King and Bailey’s pups are proving to excellent actors, all the pups and cubs are actually.

I only ever knew of LaserDiscs thanks to AVGN along with watching one on a bridge destruction back in high school. Now, if Grape REALLY wanted to use retro tech, should've showed them on a VCD or CED (Capacitance Electronic Disc).

The first and only time I've seen a laserdisc was in middle school. My eighth grade science teacher dug one out of the closet after the class didn't believe that such a thing existed. She was a wacky woman so it sounded like one of her pranks. My world shattered that day

I agree, the tyrannosaurus rex is the symbol of all dinosaurs, a Jurassic park isn't complete without an exemplar. :) Who cares that's a dangerous killer, with or without lasers? :P So, Grape has really a LaserDisc? Because, it's clearly not made of cardboard. ;) The LaserDisc is a video memory support ancestor of DVD, Olive, and it didn't got a long success. I guess she doesn't neither know what's a DVD. :D

I also really want to know where exactly laserdiscs fall on the home media timeline. Are they between VHS and DVDs? Because I thought we went straight from VHS to DVD.

Surprisingly it's BEFORE VHS/Betamax but didn't become 'popular' until the 90's.

Well, I'm late... better late than never, I guess? A Whole New World, JP style!
--
I can show you the world,
One where dinos roam freely,
Now to hide in this building
And hope that they don't want a meal-y!

The t-rex, I think it's armed
With many powerful lasers,
Oh no, wait, I'm wrong,
We'd better get our tasers!

Now, a whole new world,
This park is really really cool!
The plan seems to work,
H is a jerk,
Watch the show now until it's all through...
You're a wonderful person! You can do this! Yes, you, person reading this!

You know, I’m not going to lie, at first I thought Rick drew Grape as the size of a regular cat, because that disc looked way too big for her to be size of a small child. But nope, laserdiscs were apparently that big.
Play The Hayseed Knight. This isn’t self promotion, I just really like the game.

I am still trying to figure out why they would go from a disc to a tape and then back to a disc. That really doesn't make too much sense. Was it that VHS was an experiment to see what the next home video format would be? I never really got reverting back to something if the successor was something that was working.

As far as I know, there was no way to record on Laserdisc at home, and it didn't have as much storage as you might think. I feel like you had to flip it for the average move, though I can't recall for sure.

Betamax and VHS had the ability to record at home, and VHS up to six hours at reduced quality.

DVD I don't think had the easy ability to record at first, but it came pretty quickly, Though I don't think it got into wide use before you got TIVO.

My head-cannon is that Earl is a collector of old tech and Grape raided that. Or she painted a record silver.

I'm kind of curious myself.

Did she get it on ebay? Is it Earl and Jill's?

I'm also wondering who's going to end up playing the parts of Tim, Lex and Arnold.

Homestar Runner was a huge part of my childhood; the alt text referencing that sbemail gave me oodles of serotonin.
With the right community, getting into a webcomic at the beginning of a brand new arc can feel just as enjoyable and rewarding as being there from the beginning.
