Why is Olive called Olive?
While Ace and Rook have names that relate to "King" (Ace from playing cards and Rook from chess), it's not so obvious why Olive is called Olive. The closest connection that I've been able to think of is that "Olive" is a reference to the olive branch, which is a symbol of peace and in ancient Greek tradition it was held by supplicants to mark them as such before they approached people of power (such as Kings) which I read on the wikipedia page for "Olive branch".
For all we know, King just named her Olive for the heck of it. Any thoughts?

I suspect the simplest answer is that King got to name Rook, Bailey got to name Olive, and they both agreed on Ace.MasterAbsinthe wrote:While Ace and Rook have names that relate to "King" (Ace from playing cards and Rook from chess), it's not so obvious why Olive is called Olive. Rook is as you note a chess piece. There is a King in cards, but it doesn't have the same meaning as chess' king. The theme link is more tenuous.
As for Olive... either it was chosen because they liked it and it has no meaning, or the fact that olives are fruit has a tenuous link with the word bailey originally meaning "berry wood". Olives are not berries but drupes, a different kind of fruit.

That's very interesting. And yeah, I wouldn't think King got to name all the kids without Bailey. Actually, it's kinda patriarchical that I never even considered that Bailey might have had some say in the puppies names. Go figure.VeryAngryDeer wrote: I suspect the simplest answer is that King got to name Rook, Bailey got to name Olive, and they both agreed on Ace.

I did wonder. It was the first thing I thought of that would explain it.MasterAbsinthe wrote:And yeah, I wouldn't think King got to name all the kids without Bailey. Actually, it's kinda patriarchical that I never even considered that Bailey might have had some say in the puppies names. Go figure.

Per Rick, Rook and Ace are connected to King's name and Olive isn't. (She's named for Olive Oyl, obviously [not per Rick, that part is dissension being silly, hahaha])

I honestly just assumed that it had something to do with her eye color and that they were a very striking green. LOL

Well, they wouldn't know her eye-color at birth since puppies don't open their eyes until a couple of weeks after birth. But I also think they are olive-coloredAmazee Dayzee wrote:I honestly just assumed that it had something to do with her eye color and that they were a very striking green. LOL

If that is the case then I would say that Bailey named her and it was after someone who she was close to and had a significant friendship with.

Olives are delicious. Bailey craved olives during her pregnancy. Bailey was fantasizing about wolfing down a big bowl of olives when King asked what she wanted to name her pups. "Olive," Bailey murmured, her eyes glazed over, as she stared out the window

I don't think I've ever heard a single straight thing come out of Rick's mouth

She's named after Bailey's favorite garden; the one with the breadsticks.

It could be a tip of the hat to a legendary Australian woman

A tip of the dog collar to Popeye's gal pal?
Re: Why is Olive called Olive?
I can see him being a fan of classic cartoons. Though Popeye is still a rather big name in pop culture, just not much has been done with him as of late.
