Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
Well, you were right long ago, this fell into Development Hell. Progress on character sprites halted a while ago, then I decided to kick myself into gear. And here we are now. Also, publicly posting these to the Discord helped personally, moral-wise. For a long while, I was mostly sharing these privately with the rest of the team, who have other priorities to take care of. Figured posting publicly again would renew interest, which it did. Also why I'm cross-posting here again.

Is star still lead writer?
cause if not (holding a grudge? me? Never...), post the sprite library here, and I'll see what i can come up with for ya.

No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.

Um...yeah, uh, in terms of story writing, things are about the same; throw ideas and see what everyone agrees on. So yeah, about the same, though I will say that Teoxihuitl has since been brought in as a boss, so leniency towards canon has shifted a bit.
Well, regardless, finally finished the Arbelt siblings.
Tiger was made by grafting Peanut's head onto Bino's body, and recoloring from there. Marvin was recolored from Sale, who was a recolor of Grape. Figured that'd help, as Sale and Marvin have the same facial pattern due to the former being modeled after the latter. Zach was a heavily edited Marvin. The tail was weird to figure out on him.

uh, rocky, last i checked the sprite spacing needed to be squares to work right. i don't think you can just stretch Zach's vertically but keep the horizontal scale the same...

Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
Good point. I just needed to make the room for the ears. I doubt any of my character sheets are properly made, as I eyeballed the crops for the single characters. I'll see about compatible templates later on. Think I want to do some more of my own art for a short while, though. And maybe continue the comic edits. I'll get back to these after a bit of a break.
Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
WIP of Res' sprites. Figured I'd show progress before going further, considering that in-comic, Res has a unique head shape.

Oh I'm sure it will be fine. Just as long as it looks like you put effort into it.
Unlike how in Pokemon G/S/C, they made Bugsy have green hair instead of blue hair like they couldn't be bothered to see what his character looked like in the anime.

Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
how exactly do you propose they give a sprite a fifth color in an engine that can only handle four at a time? the gameboy cant stack sprites together to cheat the way the NES could.
that's not laziness, it's the inherent limitations of 8bit hardware.

I did not know that at the time and just thought that GameFreak was just being lazy and not trying to get the coloring right and just sticking him with green hair because it was a lot what they thought he should have. I didn't even know that Bugsy's blue hair wasn't possible for the sprite until you told me.

Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
every single game engine made for the NES, GB, GBP, & GBC, had a hard limit of four colors per tile. the NES had enough layers though that if you set one color to transparent you could layer two on top of eachother and 'fake' an object with up to 6 colors, which is how mario's special suits and megaman having a face works, but the gameboy can't render that, nor can it's pre-advance variants.

Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
Also, there might be another engine switch. Emphasis on might, as Chaoko is still testing different possibilities using the 001 Game Maker engine. One possibility is to make combat like how it is in Final Fantasy 9/10, with an ability meter that needs to fill to perform an action. I'm assuming this is like FF3, as that's really the closest I have to proper experience with a Final Fantasy game. (I mean Western FF3, by the way)
Another is to make combat simplified real-time. His older project, Thread Bound, started with such a style.
He's also considering trying to see if all-menu, all-click, or a mix of the two could work for combat.
Posting this for transparency, as it's currently announced on the Housepets Discord.

Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
if i remember correctly, FF1-5 have fixed turn orders, though some would make efforts to make it seem less scripted. 6, 7, 8, 9, & 10 all have ATB systems but each one implements it a completely different way under the hood, with 10's being the most refined and represented on screen as a flexible turn order prediction. and i stopped playing after 11, so no idea after that.

The base has really come out just perfect! I can't wait to see how the stripes will come out for him!

Started the stripes on the middle-top. Thoughts?

Do Kevin first. Even though he is in a pretty much perfect relationship with Sasha despite my best efforts in my defunct fanfic to split them up, I still wanna see Kevin as a hunky sprite.
Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
I'm not sure I'll be able to portray that in sprites of that size. Also plan on using Fox as a base for the two of them.

I know you probably won't be able to do it. I was just joking.
Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
Ended up making Bailey for now. Recolor of Fox, though I wonder if the fact that Bailey has a slightly different body shape than Fox, but don't know if enough to warrant trying to figure out if I should translate a new body shape in a sprite.

subtle variation is hard to do in sprite form. i wouldn't worry about it.

Pueblo cameo.
who cares if it makes no sense timeline wise, he's too cute not to include.

I think I will agree with that. He's adorable. Bonus points if you can make him have the hat and foam finger he had during Gale and Miles fight. XD
(Yeah I know its impossible but it would be really cool. )

Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
Honestly, I'm up for that. We've mentioned having Mungo as a cameo, and Jata as a bonus boss, I'd be up for that. They'd all require new body types, though. I'll see about getting that done in the future. Wonder if I can use the existing cat bases for a believable Pueblo? Really, might just need to change the ears to the rounded versions.

I think that you could do it because if it can be pulled off, you can do it. Also, forget what I said about the items he had after Gale robbed a tailgater.

Hmm, bonus boss? Aside from the shadow bonus bosses, how many would you include in the storyline?
It could be the judge Bahamut (holding back his full power either in dragon or whale form or both); imagine getting a dose of his megaflare.
Or it could be the Forgotten; the hundred level temple is canon but is the tower still available?
Or it could be the Gary Stu, Fino!
Or maybe Mirage, since we fought Macabre before.

or they could pull a squareenix and stick an over-powered dubiously balanced caricature of Star (and i mean the human behind the keyboard, not an avatar, character, or online persona) in as a bonus boss fight
