Re: Chat Thread 34: Something I Shouldn't Be Chatting About
My current French class is half-filled with kids who just entered the school from a French-immersion program. They're nice folks and all, but it's very annoying how much better at French they are (and, on the flipside, it's very annoying to them how relatively bad we are). The result is that nobody's learning a thing, because the teacher is (in a half-baked effort to accommodate both groups) switching between teaching stuff that everybody already knows and stuff that the immersion students already know but is too hard for the likes of me. I've all but decided to give up French after this because my comprehension actually seems to be regressing.
So anyways, now that I'm done yelling about class.

Oh, that's a good idea. French is really hard to understand spoken, at least for Amurkans like me. I mean, eventually we'd have to learn to understand it on sound alone, but this sounds like a good bridge between "listen with an English translation" and "just listen and understand it".Sleet wrote:My Spanish teacher once showed us a Spanish movie with Spanish subtitles. French just sounds like a lot of vowels to me. And people say it sounds sexy...

I find Japanese sounds sexier to me. I hated French. I dropped it after the required three years. (I wanted to take Latin, but my school dropped the program. I was limited to French or Spanish and I wanted to be different.Sleet wrote:French just sounds like a lot of vowels to me. And people say it sounds sexy...
Re: Chat Thread 34: Something I Shouldn't Be Chatting About
I don't know. French is pretty fun. Especially when you can use it in public. I went to go see the Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows movie, and I understood pretty much everything that the French people were saying.

A lot of languages sound better on one gender than the other. Like how men speaking Russian sounds much less smooth than women, for instance.

Re: Chat Thread 34: Something I Shouldn't Be Chatting About
I think it does rely much more on the difference between vowels than English does. I remember Ebly once saying that Americans turn all vowels into As. Perhaps a little hyperbolic, but it does point out that the language allows a lot of leniency with vowels- the name of my own state has a wide range of pronunciations- "mare-ah-lind", "mare-uh-lend", "mare-eh-lund", and so on. French uses some vowel sounds that English doesn't, and from my experience at least is less tolerant of interchanging them.Sleet wrote:French just sounds like a lot of vowels to me. While we (and by we I mean I) are on the subject of pronunciation, I'm curious as to the way people here pronounce certain words.
Chief among them, "crayon". How many syllables? (In the same vein, "mayonnaise.")
Also, what about "envelope" and "either/neither", both of which have two common pronunciations? I've found that I seem to say "ee-ther" and "ny-ther", oddly. "Envelope" I'm not sure how I pronounce naturally, but I think sounds better as "on-velope", so when I'm thinking about it I usually choose that one.

I interchange the pronunciations of envelope and either/neither. but for the (n)either one, I usually go with the same ones as you.

Crayon= 2 syllables
Mayonaise= 2 syllables
I actually do the opposite of what you do. I say "Eye-ther and "nee-ther."

Re: Chat Thread 34: Something I Shouldn't Be Chatting About
I see.
I have a friend who ribs on me for pronouncing "crayon" as a one syllable word (the dictionary would agree with him). I pointed out that it's the same essentially the same thing as pronouncing "mayonnaise" with two syllables, but then I realized that he doesn't do that either.
He also looked at me funny when I pronounced "turbine" as in "turban", but I think it's more natural like that (and unlike crayon, the dictionary sides with me on this one).
(It's actually because I choose my opinions by spinning a giant novelty game show wheel.)

Well that's a different word entirely, which is one of the few situations in which I would declare an alternate pronunciation of a word "wrong" (it's the same reason that I'm adamant that "aunt" is not a homophone of "ant", but that's one I know I'm never going to win). You might direct your vision three inches upward and point out that pronouncing "turbine" as "turban" breaks my own rule, but since when have I been consistent.Sleet wrote:en-VEL-up. :B *smacked*

I don't shorten mayonnaise, mostly because I never eat the stuff and the only time I ever say it is when asking "Is mayonnaise an instrument?"

Re: Chat Thread 34: Something I Shouldn't Be Chatting About
I think a smidgen of mayonnaise can improve a lot of sandwiches, but I don't think it should be slathered on everything. It's not bad, but it has a fairly limited function.

Cray-ahn. Two syllables.
May-uh-naze. Three syllables.
Ehn-vel-ope.
And the either/neither is a strange case. When I write them down, my mind automatically pronounces them in my head as ee-ther/nee-ther, but when I actually say them I tend to pronounce them as eye-ther/nye-ther. Go figure.

I wanted to make a mayonnaise instrument but A) I am not able to procure such copious amounts of Mayo, and B) I am not musically gifted enough to play such a contraption.

Buy several bottles of mayo, and squeeze an increasing amount from each one such that they all have different levels of mayo. Hit them with a drumstick. If you're lucky and my wild guess is somehow right, they might make somewhat different sounds.
Once at a party I gathered up all the unused little unfurling-one-note-kazoo party favors and realized that they weren't all on the same note. I arranged them roughly by pitch and crafted them into an instrument with the help of a hat and some tape. It couldn't play much of a tune, but there was some novelty to it.
