My dog is suddenly scared of the hallway?

My dog is suddenly scared of the hallway?
For 6 years my dog has slept by my feet in bed, never a care in the world. But recently my dog has been terrified of the hallway. She would crawl up to the top of the bed, near my head, shaking. And trying to push up under me, and when I try to get her away she is extremely reluctant and won't go near the bottom of the bed.(closest to the hallway)
When I finally get her off, she runs under the bed and doesn't come out until morning.
I'm posting this from my phone in bed, trying to get some sleep, but this behavior is freaking me out to the point where I can't fall asleep.
Any advice?

My dog does this when it comes to lightning. Maybe it's something similar? She mightbe hearing something that's putting her on edge or developing a bad sense for narrow spaces.
Depends if this is the only place it happens though in my opinion. hope that helps.

Re: My dog is suddenly scared of the hallway?
it could possibly be ghosts or negative energy. (and yes, that's a totally serious suggestion. animals are sensitive to that sort of thing.) or it could just be a weird smell or sound.

It's probably a weird smell or sound. Maybe you can try to keep her in the hallway for a bit so she becomes more familiar and realizes there's nothing to worry about?

Is it bad I was going to say the exact same thing? xDPenwrite wrote:The Slender Man.
That said, I really have no ideas that haven't been brought up already, so I'm just going to second Sleet's suggestion.
Re: My dog is suddenly scared of the hallway?
She's perfectly fine in the morning, but at night is the only time she spazzes out and won't go in the hallway.

Oh no, don't do that. How would you like to be dragged on a place you fear?Sleet wrote:It's probably a weird smell or sound. Maybe you can try to keep her in the hallway for a bit so she becomes more familiar and realizes there's nothing to worry about?
Anyway, I agree with the others, I doubt she's afraid of the hallway itself, only something that is in the hallway. Let's not get thieves and paranormal activity involved. You should try searching your hallway, maybe there's some big bugs or spiders that she's afraid of.

It's been going on for a while now, and I just searched the hallway and there's nothing I could see.

Then it can only be something you CAN'T see. D:Zander wrote:It's been going on for a while now, and I just searched the hallway and there's nothing I could see.

True. Dogs can hear a lot that we don't.

Re: My dog is suddenly scared of the hallway?
Don't indulge your dog an irrational fear.
A few weeks ago, my dog Apollo was spooked by something he saw during a walk and he suddenly didn't want to go on a walk anymore. This manifested in wanting to turn around when we neared the thing he was scared of, even though it wasn't there anymore. Well, I made him go anyway. (It helps that we finally figured out a way for me to tell him "go!" forcefully without being too rough). After that, he would still get scared on subsequent days, but it was always at an earlier point--instead of near the location, it was a ways back. Then in our front yard. Then just before we left. Then he would retreat to his box when I told him it was time for a walk. Then he retreated to his box when he anticipated it was time for a walk. Then he was over it and went back to normal.
It helps though that Apollo is a rather compliant dog and doesn't need much coaxing for most things.

Let it be known that I am on team paranormal activity.
From a BF Skinner standpoint, some sort of positive stimulus to associate with the hallway would be a good idea. Find a way to reward your dog for associating with the hallway. Move her food and water bowls into the hallway, call her into the hallway and give her a treat when she comes, etc. You can train pigeons to do math like that.

Get sirious people, we're talking about a scared dog.
I'd sugjest going with the positive reinforcement idea, or maybe some kind of thing that smells great to cover what smell might be giving your dog a hard time. Also, take a low end mic over the area, it could catch a sound that hurts your dog's ears. It might show up as static, but if not, well...
Call me weird but I say the paranormal thing is reasonable, but I think ghosts are real, so. ignore me if you think I'm crazy.

Re: My dog is suddenly scared of the hallway?
I was being totally serious when suggesting the paranormal energy as a possibility, so I don't think you're weird at all.
Re: My dog is suddenly scared of the hallway?
I had seen you were, but I was 'typing' at those who shot it down thinking that ghosts are just a load of salami.

Re: My dog is suddenly scared of the hallway?
have you gotten any new appliances recently like a fridge or TV because my family had a problem where the TV emitted a noise on standby which we couldn't hear but freaked out my dog and birds. we knew it was the TV because when we disconnected the animals were fine until we reconnected it.
I am unsure of this Sanity you speak of.

New question. It's been a while since this thread was started; are you still having this problem?

When I hung out with Zander last week, I asked him and he said that his dog was scared of the hallway the day before and the day of the earthquake (8/23/11)Penwrite wrote:New question. It's been a while since this thread was started; are you still having this problem?
But after that, she was normal, as far as I know.

Not really, a lot of animals seem to have the ability to detect earthquakes.
