Guys, there are some parts of the fandom it's not a good idea to discuss in any depth. There's a reason every other attempt at furry-related topics has failed horribly.

This can depend very heavily on who it is you're "coming out" to. TRUST ME.
Anyway, my preferred explanation:

"You know how there's a fandom built up around anime? Furry is like that, but with talking animals instead of humans who have alarmingly huge eye sockets."
You've shattered my mind and rearranged the pieces into something beautiful.

Thankfully it seems public image is improving. The more exposure the fandom gets, the harder it is for the media to play us up as a secret subculture of deviants.

Really, how popular is the furry fandom? There's a lot of furry movies and stuff out there, but I don't think a lot of people actually realize what furry is. I guess I'm asking for statistics, I guess.

we're a lot bigger than some people realize, but we're not very popular.

but there's a good deal of furries. it's hard to put an exact number on it, though, because there are a lot of varying levels of community activity.

It's not something everyone knows about, but you'd be surprised how many people, especially young people, have at least a passing familiarity with the fandom. Not to say their image is always correct, but we're not completely unknown.

I will say that to draw furries is to like furries and to like furries is to be furries!

Welll.. If one draws furries, their probably a furry anyways. However, that doesn't immediately make anyone who draws furries a furry.

That isn't true; lots of people draw furries! Tracy Butler is a good internet example, but all the artists working for Disney and pretty much any other animation studio draw furries and probably only a select few of them are actually furries.

many people just find it easier to draw cartoon animals than to draw cartoon people.
also, Bittersweet Candy Bowl is not drawn by a furry.

That's kind of what I was saying. x] Maybe not the first thing I said though...

There are lots of people who draw anthropomorphic types of art, that doesn't necessarily make all of them furries though.

Furries are easier to draw.
I agree, a human's face is more complex than a furry/cartoon animal's face. Also you can get away with not drawing clothes for your furry character, but the same isn't true for human characters...

Well, you CAN get away with not drawing the clothes but that wouldn't be very apropriate for this site.

I'm really surprised so many people here ARENT furries to be totally honest.
I guess you dont have to be a furry to enjoy watching anthropomorphic house pets create drama and act completely adorable

I can draw EXCELLENT stick figures.

With more complicated stuff - I draw pretty good from trace lines and such, I just lack creativity. :/

Creativity is nothing...creativity is actually just something the mind brings up as a want of the impossible...if you believe in the impossible, creativity will come to you!

Okay, here's a text conversation I had with my cousin recently...

This is about 2 weeks ago.

Me: I want to show you some artwork that I've been doing lately.
Her:Well, only send one because I don't have a picture plan.
Me:This is one of them. It's a character in a story I'm writing. It's hard to make it out fully, but here you go. I've been really into furry art lately.(I sent here a drawing.)
Her:Is it about a buff animated fox?
Me:No, but it has a buff Akita in it...Wait, you know what furry is?
Her:Um...Furry as in fuzzy wuzzy?( )
Me:Furry as in the art and movies and whatnot.

(The conversation ended there, but yesterday she sent me a text asking about it for some reason...)

Her:You said the stuff you're trying to draw is called furry, right?
Me:Yeah, furry.
Her:It's kinda weird.(  )
Me:Some of it can be. A lot of it's really cool. There's a bunch of furry stuff out there. Take Kung Fu Panda for instance, that's furry. "Anthropomorphic" which means animals having human characteristics, is what that is.

She hasn't replied yet, but I think it's going to take me actually talking to her face-to-face to explain what furry is and how I consider myself a furry... I don't think me texting her is going to do anything...Once she texts me back I'll try to explain more to her.

Hopefully that goes well.

My friend saw me reading housepets! and didn't seem to care that I was reading a online comic about cute talking animals, just kinda looked at me weird, BUT HE'S JUST AS WEIRD! , soo

Also, he saw me attempting to draw a anthropomorphic fox many months ago and just complemented that I was doing a cruddy job.

Touge, that's a really good way to go about it!

I was telling my friends that I have a reputation at my QuikTrip for wearing a tail ('cause a guy at a furmeet I was at works there and told me), and I brought up that I have a collar. So later, at his house, I was like, "Oh, here's the collar I was talking about" and I put it on. We talked about it a little and I explained why I don't wear it in public ('cause people might think it means something else), and they understood. And I showed my ears off real quick too and explained that I have a bigger tail, but I took 'em off pretty much immediately because I figured they'd be too distracting. And they didn't match the little tail I was wearing.

Hmm... I think the better way would be calling them "cartoon animals" or "walking animals", these terms don't have any stigma (not to my knowledge). If they ever found out about furry someday, they will realize that cartoon animals and furry are almost and can pretty much be the same thing!

That's probably what I'll say to her when she texts me back. That is probably the best and simplest way to describe furries.

I am indeed a Furry and have been on for years although I really just recently admitted to myself it a few years ago.
I wish I could draw furries. Or anything for that matter.

Me too, I guess that's why I like to write furry stories seeing how my arts style sucks.

People are only allowed to be furries as young as 10 or so. Any younger and it doesn't count; everyone likes cartoon animals at that age!
