Think about it in terms of your own height; just imagine where a six year old's head would be when standing next to you. If it's your knee, just measure (or estimate) the length from your foot to your knee.

i cant imagine distance. everyone's hieght in my head is "shorter than me" or occasionally "about my height"
i couldnt tell you how far away i am from my door. :/

Yeah you can! I know this because I'm American too.

The metric system isn't going anywhere for a long time. It's either convert or forever have space shuttles blowing up due to conversion errors.
