Most important thing I've learned from D&D?
No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.

Now watch as the pack nicknamed "the members" slowly trek to reach their goal: The grounds known as "score 1000"
Oh no! It's an ambush! The members are brutally attacked by the rival pack known as "the mods"!
They scatter and regroup away from the merciless mods. They didn't reach their goal, but they still have hope. They will resume their efforts to reach score 1000 when the mods are asleep.
