When I was younger, most of the kids had a pet turtle caught in the local woods, swamps, or ponds. The unwritten rules were (1) no snapping turtles, (2) release in spring (mating season), and (3) release at site of capture. Today, with a few exceptions, most of the kinds we'd catch are now endangered species.

when i was young Sega didn't suck yet.
Most important thing I've learned from D&D?
No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.

Our youngest, Eleanor, had several Polly Pocket people. One day, the Border Collie (his name was Smiley), swallowed one and she was just heart-broken. However, nature took its course and Polly soon returned to us by a predictably circuitous route. For years afterwards, "Polly Pocket's "Incredible Journey'" " was a sandar theme of more than a few chuckles.

Smiley's not with us anymore but Ellie still has her "Pollys".

Ba-yack in mah daiy...

Those first-person shooting games weren't just about crouching behind a chest-high sandbag and pulling a trigger until the enemy stopped coming at ya. You had ta dodge left, right, up, even down. But make sure first there wasn't lava in any of those directions! And then, when the level was over, you'd have to try and remember where you saw that exit door, while the klaxons blared and the whole thing started shaking its darn self to pieces!

Ba-yack in mah daiy...

Those Lego sets y'all play with, mate, weren't just about telling little ninja batman stories. There was this whole epic horror tale called the Bi-onicle, which went on for years and then it just fizzled out right as it was getting to the end. But it still beats me why they decided to skip right over the beginning with the Mono-onicle.

We followed the rule of three! Which means I need a third thing here!
Back in my day spirits were brave, the stakes were high, men were real men, women were real women and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri.

(no, I don't know if that's supposed to sound American or Australian either...)
(and no, "when in doubt quote Douglas Adams" is a life philosophy)

.....and we walked uphill both ways

Walking the mile to school was a good way for a kid to be alone and reflect on life without some adult giving you a tirade on "How lazy young people are these days." Sure, you coulda rode a bike but then you had be alert for all the drunks driving to or from their jobs.

When I was younger, I went to public elementary school instead of being homeschooled.

And BOY do I have some stories to tell from kindergarten and the 1st grade.
That sounded better in my head

When I was younger I used to be obsessed with Ben 10, I pretended I was Ben Tennyson and wore an Omnitrix to be transformed to the aliens. I also bought all the merchandise.

When I was younger, snow was much more common. Now it falls only like 2-3 times during a year and melts immediately in most cases
I dunno, just imagine something funny here

When I was younger, I didn't yet understand that the temperature everybody called minus 20 was really below minus 40.
And when that first one's in Celsius, it's the sort of difference that can cause you to lose a few extremities!

Also hadn’t learned yet that the best way to prevent frostbite was to put your relevant bits under cold water. Though I did manage to learn that one before it became important ;)
