Looks like Res to me. Keep at it until it's how you wanted. If folks criticize, assume it's well-intentioned and keep drawing. If it's mean...Hey, that's why God created the "delete" key... Regards.

I created this character before I knew of housepets, so I ain't changing it now. It can't really be a copy if you didn't know the other thing existed.

....Buster. I am so happy right now....thank you so much....I honestly am completely speechless....It is everything I hoped for and more. I thank you a thousand times over, thank you so much. Like, honestly, thank you.

As for what you said, West, yeah, you hit the nail on the head. I obviously based my main OC off myself, and you 100% got it right. Maybe I didn't plan ahead with the whole stripes thing, but the fact that you where able to read my personality, just based upon my appearance is really cool. So, thanks for that too. ^^

jokes aside, unless you're intentionally trying to give your characters noodle-arms, arms are never actually uniform width the whole way along. there's usually an uneven taper. also you might want to practice perspective a bit. as in that position, the upper arms should actually appear shorter than normal due to foreshortening.

Well, I hate and love this drawing. I love it because I poured 3 hours of work into it, and really tried, but I hate it because it is poorly colored, there's no shading, and I just....I am a torn person on this drawing. It stinks.

In all seriousness, the drawing has a story behind it. Meet me in the woods by Lord Huron is one of my favorite songs, and I remember last year, me and my dad went camping. He's been going up there his entire life, and I remember cranking this song whilst tearing through the woods on a Rhino. This is still a pretty special drawing. Thanks for listening to my memories.

Sometimes, Jolt, the occasion for a drawing is more important than the technique. I have a Xerox box full of such pictures, mine, my kids, and some given to me by students. None will ever hang in the Getty or the Louvre, but they are artifacts of ordinary moments made the more special by these tokens.

You've probably noticed, too, how Rick's characters have evolved. Many cartoonists will tell you they've played with a character for years that fist came to them in an odd moment. Of course, some of the changes emerge from the artist refining their techniques and style. But it's not just abilities ...

I am especially fond of a Warner Brother's cartoon starring the redoubtable Daffy Duck. I can't remember it's name. In it, the artist is constantly redesigning, erasing, giving poor Daffy about thirty different comical bodies and backgrounds. Yet, in tone, accent, attitude, posture, the unique personality that is Daffy shines hilariously through all the indignities. Whatever physically is done to the Duck, he remains unbroken, defiant, and endures unbowed, despite the humiliations. Simply put, Daffy ... like Peanut and Grape, like Disney's Pinocchio ... has become "real".

Walt Kelly, the American cartoonist who created a comic strip called "Pogo" (1946-1973), was sort of a forerunner to Rick Griffin. Set in Okeefinokee Swamp, Pogo's world was populated by almost two hundred different animal characters, who acted out stories from slapstick silliness to profound observations on the political, social, religious and cultural behavior of "us'ns and them hooman beans". Talking about his menagerie, he reflected, "Most of my creatures are caricatured comedians, not really true. They walk on, say their lines, and then go wherever until I need them again, if ever. The permanent, recurring folks, however, are real personalities, because they embody one aspect of a real person ... unfortunately, that person is me."

If you read through Rick's saga, you see this process unfolding with the BGardens folk. Some, begun as caricatures, have become more fuller, complicated personalities ... Fox, for example, or Fido. Others seem to be transitioning into depth, such as Maxwell or Jessica, but most have remained at the level of predictable comedians like Tiger and Marvin or Sasha and Daisy. After all, this IS a funny animal strip, so comics must abound. But even then, every now and then, folks like Tiger, Sasha, and Daisy delight us with an unexpected flash of ..... humanity (?).

So be gentle with your new friend. At least, he will always be an icon of a time you wanted to capture as an unrealized part of yourself. At best, you'll find him a mirror cor your own growth and change. We're all wired to explore, including our inner worlds and "Pete temples". You're just more open in yours...

Enough of me. Regards.

Re: Art Thread

I was digging through some older photos at home, and discovered a drawing I forgot I had. It touched me that I still owned it after almost 2 years, and decided to redraw it. This is the finished product. Like many of my drawings, this one has a story....

Roughly 3 years ago, I, a foolish child, not even yet a teenager, became infatuated with a girl named Cecelia. She was pretty, smart, and tough as nails. I knew she loved others, and so I hid among my peers for almost a year, after finally deciding to approach her. Each day, I fell more in love, and realized I should tell her while I still had a chance.

So I did, and she turned me down, but said she wished to remain my friend, and would be thinking of me. I was ecstatic she didn't punch me, and so we remained friends. I started drawing pictures for her, little ways of showing my love. Despite not being with me, she loved the little romantic scenes I began to draw of us, and so I drew her a new picture every day. She was the reason I draw at least one full drawing a day.I started calling her nicknames like Blue, and Scribbles, as we both shared a passion for drawing, even if we had different styles. It went on like this until one day in Eighth Grade.

Blue told me she was gay.

Obviously, I was heartbroken, as I still loved her, and had gone with her on one occasion, only to feel I wasn't good enough for her, and not talk to her for a week out of fear. But I put on a smile, told her I loved her and have supported her ever since. She was the end of my interest in being romantic in people, or being open about it.

I encountered her in the halls a few weeks ago, two or so months after High School started, and she was with her girlfriend. I kindly greeted both of them, and gave her my previous drawing you see above. Do I still love her? I'm afraid so. But as long as she is happy, I am content, and I suppose it will be that way.

When I dug up this drawing, I decided to draw it for personal reasons, and never show it anyone, possibly burning it like I did with many of my other sketches for her. But as I finished coloring it, I suddenly realized that, weather or not this drawing has a personal story to it, it doesn't matter. I am pretty proud of this, and I wanted to share it, along with the history it has, with all of you. Thank you for listening.

Regards,
~Jolty

Very sorry to be opaque, Jolty.

"Charming" is my honest reaction to a clever, sweet composition. I try to avoid sarcasm. It does not promote comfortable exchange and, besides, i'm not very good at it. A little snark or a tease can add a little piquancy, but like any seasoning, should not be salted too heavily. We're supposed to have fun here.

I just thought I would post a little teaser for Chapter 8 of The Way the Stars Shine Tonight. This is going to be a pretty action packed chapter, and a hopefully pretty long one too. As such, it will probably take a while, and since I have school, it will probably be a long time coming. I apologize sincerely.
