Pencil, a black gel pen, colored pencils, and occasionally markers.
Hey, for everyone who hates scanners but don't or can't do their art digitally: Try a camera with good quality picture taking, and make sure it has a text option.* My Samsung SL420 works awesome with it. Take a picture and upload. So much easier than stupid scanners that distort your color quality and show every little eraser mark like it's a gigantic smudge on the page.
*Or, you know, if you don't have the text option thing and your camera is just that awesome (with focusing and not changing the colors) all on its own. Turning off the flash and setting automatic macro focus works good (for me anyways).

Well, I probably wouldn't be good with clay either.

I use a pencil and a nice clean sheet of paper. I also like short pencils, that way detail is easier to draw.

Re: Prefered Art Medium
The world of art is defined insulting yourself and being envious of others.
If you can get past this, great, you're in the minority.

Re: Prefered Art Medium
This?Art is about slaving away at a project, a story, for years, just for every panel to be the potential butt of someone's joke. Art encourages and then punishes you for doing something different. You can try to be seen as brilliant, but you'd better expect to be seen as deranged. And count on every mistake following you to the grave. Pick your least-favorite personal mistake. Now imagine being reminded of it every other month. I admit things like "bad security" were a mistake. But why is it those things and not all the other things I've done have to be what defines me? Most parents are scared of the day their kid asks where babies come from. I'm scared [censored]less of the day Randy asks "Daddy, did you draw this?" Then again, any artist worth his salt is also a colossal blowhard who spends hours soapboxing pretentious rants so maybe I'm well on my way after all.

I still think that quote is flawed. He puts it in the context of what 'art is about' but all he talks about is his perception of people's reactions to his art (which if I remember who it is correctly, isn't exactly brilliant in the first place). I don't see that as having any genuine bearing on it.
I was going to make a joke but then I did.

Laying face down on the floor in a scrap of self-scrutiny is a defining part of the artistic process.
The artists that have a true passion for their work are the ones that will emerge victorious.
Overcoming ones own insecurities is a challenge of life we all must face.

Re: Prefered Art Medium
I think he was only being partially serious there. He wasn't so much trying to seriously define art as talk about one trait of art. Earlier on he says something along the lines of "being an artist has nothing to do with art," so the whole rant was probably somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

Re: Prefered Art Medium
In a better light, the reason artists tend to be self-deprecating of their work is A. they were there the whole time it was made, so mistakes and flaws are easier to pick out, and B. a piece is never really perfect. I don't mean that all artists are terrible, I mean that there is no real obtainable level of art that is perfect. The only piece of art I've heard of that could be called perfect is a Dutch piece from the 19th century, and that piece is almost photographic in appearance. So, unless you either have the time (you don't if you do other things besides art) or the skill, there's always something that can be improved on. And I'm pretty confident no one here has that much skill (I am including Kyderra, Shyanne, Two_Twig, and everyone who has ever posted something on this forum that they made). As such, there's always that desire to touch up the piece and make it better. Also, keep in mind that "perfect" or "finished" and "getting the point across" are two different things. In other words, your piece can look good to the audience because it's message is clear (or, if it's abstract, it embodies the feeling you're going for), and look terrible to you because it doesn't fit the mould you're aiming to put it in.

I'm pretty sure you did it completely by accident, but if you didn't, that sentence was absolutely brilliant.Teh Brawler wrote:Also, keep in mind that "perfect" or "finished" and "getting the point across" are two different things.

Perfect, finished, and getting the point across are three different things, but you said they were two. Thus, your sentence was imperfect, but nevertheless managed to get the point across, thereby proving its own point.Teh Brawler wrote:Depends. Well, I find that perfect and finished, while not the same, are interchangeable in the artistic area.Sleet wrote:Perfect, finished, and getting the point across are three different things, but you said they were two. Well that's fairly imperfect if you ask me.
And yet it gets the point across.
