I'm always the last to hear new pop songs, not because I avoid them on principle or anything, but because I don't really search them out. I don't even know where I'd hear a new song if I really wanted to, I've always kind of assumed everybody else absorbs them through some sort of demonic, unnatural osmosis when I'm not looking. But you better believe I can sing along to Freddie and the Dreamers and other such people that are now hard of hearing and wrinkly.
Or decomposing

Speaking of, anyone who thinks that songs with puffy inane lyrics, artists with bizarre and eccentric theatrics, and utterly stupid dances are an invention of today's youth never did the Freddie.

Wow, finally Dio is mentioned in this thread! I love Dio, his band is one of my favorites ever. You should try listening to tracks like We Rock, King of Rock n Roll, Evil Eyes, Rainbow in the Dark, and such. They're all as good as Holy Diver, if not even better :3

Not sure if anyone here has even heard of Crowded House but I've had their little 80s hit "Don't Dream It's Over" stuck in my head for a very long time now. It's that chorus dang it!

I can imagine him on the ground on his back with your foot on his chest holding him down while you shove speakers in his face. "LISTEN AND ENJOY IT. SO HELP ME YOU BETTER FREAKING ENJOY IT."

You nerds are gradually teaching me all these electronic subgenres. I should just call it all "techno" and watch you people squirm.

But dubstep is generally ridiculous, so I wouldn't expect him to enjoy it! It can be good but at this point it's cookie cutter music.

And calling it 'techno' doesn't really make me squirm when I know it's a joke! :P

What if someone like me, with little knowledge of or interest in such things, referred to it as techno?

Also, because I feel the need to contribute something otherwise relevant to the thread, Amy Winehouse has died from an apparent drug overdose.

In the context of this discussion it's pretty clear you already know that it's generally a peeve for anyone who knows electronic genres to hear people call it all 'techno', so you calling it techno wouldn't prompt much of a reaction either.

I strongly, strongly do not advise discussing her death. I really can't see any constructive conversation coming out of it, and how Winehouse has conducted herself over the years only leads the topic to skirting around a discussion on drugs. Housepets is not the place.

Sure, but honestly, it's already soooort of off-topic. It was my interpretation that this topic is for discussing music itself (like, genres, techniques, specific songs, or the performance-related aspects like what bands and people are touring where) rather than the lives of the people who make it. Of course being off topic doesn't really matter and I don't think anyone really minds when people talk about musicians' lives, but Winehouse's life (and now death) strikes me as being a bit like talking about 'being furry' in that it comes across as a matter of time before the topic turns inappropriate.

I sympathise for her family, but I started doing that a long time ago. It seems a lot of her family came to terms with her death a long time ago, too. I suppose it was never really going to be a surprise. Saddening.

I know very little about musical genres and what elements define them.

I want to hear about what people think about particular decades of music. I'd personally have to say my least favorite is the '90s. I like some songs from there, but I'm young enough not to feel very attached to the decade.

I grew up in the '90s, but feel no particular connection to the music thereof. I have strong affinity for music from the 1960s-1980s, which feels rather encompassing of a lot of stuff, but my interest is less so because I haven't heard a lot!

I really enjoy the 90s, especially Grunge music from then.

However, the 2000s had some nice choices.

90s were decent. I have good memories of those songs. Can't really say I have a real opinion on anything else. Other than some bands were amazing and I listen to them all the time.

The 2000's have some...horrible, horrible acts that came around. The decade I remember the most...sadly. Saw the comeback of several types of music, and the rise of certain...kind of useless things (Autotune for most people). Also, however, led me to my love for every kind of music (barring Country and Rap) via Pandora Radio. Omnomnom love that thing.

Can't really say I have a favorite or least favorite, as one of those guys that literally listens to (almost) everything under the sun. I'm driven by the beats!

Every decade has their own ups and downs, I think. The 90s was OK and quite memorable, since like Dissension, I also grew up in the 90s.

In my teenage years though, I'd only listened to oldies and rock songs initially. Then, through various exposures from friends, animes, games and etc., I came to love all genre of music. Except death metal, since I still don't understand it :?

Speaking of the 90s, how bout some Celine Dion from back then?
It's all coming back to me now

This song ... well ... holds a rather bitter memory to me from when I was a kid, but I still like it. =3

I don't think I have any favorite artist that debuted after about 95', and I was born in 93'. I didn't start getting into music until the 2000's so I don't care for the 90's much anyway.

My favorite decade in music would be either the 70's and 80's. I don't really like that many bands from the 60's and 90's.

I like the cheesy toytown rave music from the 90s.

It is a terrible, terrible secret.

Hocus Pocus is my guilty pleasure

One thing that irritates me like mad is "modern music sucks/no substance/overcommercialised/etc ... ... ... i only like the [insert decade]." People seem to be blind to all the bad music that has long since been forgotten, and ignoring how overcommercialised things have always been in the music industry.

Thrash, Death, Doom, Power, Western, Pirate Metal... I could go on an on.
Why I like metal, is because of its copious amounts of subgenres.

Same here. Heck, I only really listen to Classic Hard rock(to heck with the new stuff), Thrash and Power metal.

I don't really listen to Death unless its parody, like Death Metal Nyan cat, or Death Metal Friday.

Hmm, maybe it's because I can barely make out what they're singing, and sometimes they just groan and growl. (@.@')
The guitars and drums are nice to listen to, though.

@redmarker97: I tried listening to Death Metal Friday, the vocal's a bit creepy. *shivers*

A~nyway, I stumbled across this rendition of the Chocobo song. I don't know why, but I was laughing throughout the entire song, especially with the subtle messages.

I initially thought they really sang that, until I looked at the lyrics. XD

I was watching through some old anime in my collection, and I came across one that really got me.

I mean the song. No matter how many times I listened to the song, I always cry, and yet I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I don't know about others though, but that's definitely how I feel.

One thing I don't get, My Mum grew up in the 70's yet HAS THE WORST TASTE IN MUSIC IMAGINABLE! I swear, the next time I hear beyonce or whatever she's called. I'm going to pull out all her eyelashes and forcefeed her them. HOW CAN YOU LISTEN TO ONE SONG FOR TWO HOURS STRAIGHT D';

Also Disson, it's "uncomfirmed" about her death. Yes it's obvious it's an overdose but it maybe something else.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every single minute of it.
