Song vs. Song

Post by Anthroguy101 »

Has anyone heard the cover to "Over My Head (Cable Car)" by A Day To Remember? What do you think's better, the cover or the original?

Probably the original. Screamo can be fun, don't get me wrong, but it's not quite my cup of tea.

I prefer to sit at the table with my ipod on loop with "Still Alive" by The Orange Box (Original) and think about life...

While that is the original source, it's actually written by Jonathan Coulton and performed by Ellen McLain. just giving credit where credit is due.

I was gonna mention that. XD

Either way, in my opinion Coulton sang the song greater the Glados. That being said, there are some amazing duets across YouTube.

just saying, got 'EndGame - Rise Against' today. If anybody else has heard it, what're your thoughts? Personally, I'm really impressed. Not as impressed as by some of their prior albums, but I still quite enjoy it. :D

lol, read this post and choked a little.
No offense, but the "Punk Goes -" is a load of crap, imo. None of the bands off of any of the albums are punk-rock to begin with, makes me rage just a wee-bit. In fact, one band that I specifically hate with a burning passion off of one of those albums, is "I See Stars".

Let me show you why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1BLO0vw2p4

Perfectly good song ruined, and murdered.

I don't mind it. it's not like doing it differently got rid of the original. I see covers as different, and (almost) never bad.
and if a cover is too similar to the original, I just get rid of the original on my iPod and put the cover on, such as the Greenday over of I Fought The Law that I have.

and that song was done twice in that series. here's another.

I'm confused, are you defending the original or the cover you posted that you hate?
because I think sleet was saying that the one I posted was better than the one you posted, not that the one you posted is better than the original.

Oooooohhhh, I see now. My bad, my bad.

Anyways, since I was sort of on the discussion of punk-rock, do you listen to any yourself?

If I'm right, I think the only person here that listens to punk-rock is RockstarRaccoon.

I used to love The Offspring. Still do, though, they the first band I started listening to.

But that's all when it comes to punk rock and mean.

I've always been a fan of pop punk and punk that doesn't go overboard. I'm not quite sure what they call the heaviest type of punk though. (like, I've never been able to like Blitzkrieg Bop).

I don't know why, but I laughed at Mraz's cover. Not in a horrible way, but just comparing it to the original. Mainly because if it wasn't for the fact he mentioned what the song was, I'd have never guessed it was Blitzkrieg Bop. Nice cover though, even if he has changed everything bar the lyrics.

Sum 41 - the Hell song. Always been a fan of this song.

this. that's why I don't care what genre it is, as long as I like it. unless it's by a disney musician(Miley Cyrus etc.) or Justin Bieber. the "i like it" part also usually excludes rap, hip-hop, and country from my list.

I don't count out music just for its genre, but some genres I'm more or less likely to enjoy than others. I'm always open to anything, though.

Manufactured tween pop isn't really a genre, so I can say fairly safely that I don't like any of it.

I said usually excludes rap, Hip-hop, and country. it's not that I don't like the genres, just most of the time I dislike the songs that are part of that genre.

Oh, I understood. I wasn't accusing you of anything.

I tend to dislike those genres as well, but I still like some of them.

I'm hesitant to call "rap" a genre, though. It's just a style of lyrical delivery that's used frequently in hip-hop.

Punk for me gets very literal. I like my punk... punk, I guess you could say. By punk, I mean own ideals, and not living in someone's shadow. By that, I exclude a lot of punk-rock bands out there falling under any genre from pop-punk to hardcore-punk. Primarily a lot of the British punk-rock bands. The mohawks, studded leather jackets, boots, tight jeans, etc. Very pseudo, as they are try hards, living in someone elses' shadow. Even their lyrics, primarily containing anarchy, violence, abusing alcohol and other drugs, living trashy, discord, etc. In fact, I think it would be a lot easier to just name them as a term a lot know; "Postcard Punks".

Now, dipping into the punk-rock I enjoy, would vary from a lot of well known, to bands know one knows. Starting with Descendents, my favorite pop-punk band out there. One of the few who pioneered pop-punk back in the early 80's. Their songs range from love, to being nerdy, showing rebellion amongst social norms and the push for social norms, never ending quest to find good food, and even some political compositions. They don't need mohawks, or even studded jackets and boots, they're just themselves, making music they love. Of course, a lot of punk-rock bands follow these ideals in their own little ways. Propagandhi, Crime in Stereo, ALL, Stephen Egerton, Operation Ivy, ChucksNation, Crass, GuFF, Screeching Weasel, Ben Weasel & His Iron String Quartet, Dag Nasty, Bad Religion, Fugazi, Dance Hall Crashers, SWIZ (especially!), BigWig, Minutemen, Urinals, Germs, TSOL, ChinaWhite, the list just goes on. The beauty of the majority of these bands is that they anti-conformist within their own genre, and within the whole music scene itself. Or at least that's how I perceive the music made from these specific punk-rock bands, and I'm not even including all. That is how I would classify punk-rock.

Since we've been Punkpostin', here's a list of punk rock that I like:
At the Drive-In, The Damned, The Ruts, Dead Kennedys, Fugazi, Husker Du, Shellac, Big Black, Bodyjar, Liquid Liquid, Mclusky, Radio Birdman, Rapeman, S.O.D., Television, The Gun Club, and Wire. Then there's Brutal Truth, Dripping, and Nasum, but they're barely punk and mostly metal (aka grindcore).

RE: Punk Goes, I find the idea of anything that New Found Glory, Say Anything, The Devil Wears Prada, or All Time Low contributed to being called good really funny. Especially since this thing counts ODB, 2Pac, The Roots (?!?!?), Rihanna, Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre, and OutKast as "crunk", and hair metal as "actually metal".

I remember mine. Mine was Avenged Sevenfold - Bat country. Well, either that or Queen - We are the Champions. I think I kinda got into Queen because of my dad though. Avenged Sevenfold was like nothing I've heard before, and I loved every part of it.
