It's OK. I really wasn't expecting anybody to post in this topic anyway. It was more for me to show off how varied my taste in music is.

My music app of choice doesn't track my most played songs. I use Musi on my old iPhone 5c, which gets music through youtube, so I can't guess what they'd be because I'm always discovering new stuff. But if you limit it to the Apple music app it'd probably be a selection from Eiffel 65 and the Stellaris soundtrack.

I don't know if the app I use on my phone would track this, but, realistically most of my top 25 would probably be my own tracks anyway, 'cause after I mix and master a track I like to use the bluetooth and/or headphone jack to listen to it through a few different audio systems and make sure it sounds decent on all of them. So each one tends to get a lot of consecutive plays, especially if I find an issue with the mix and have to go back to adjust. Even if I update the file the phone still counts it as the same song if the filename and the tags are identical.
The list really wouldn't be very representative of the sorts of stuff I just listen to.

If there were a list like that, I'd imagine it would contain at least a few of Dan Wentz's tracks from the Overload soundtrack (and maybe some of his work from other games too), some Nine Inch Nails, maybe a few Slayer or Pantera songs, and possibly one or two of the night-time stages from Sonic Unleashed, just off the top of my head.
"Haunted" by Type O Negative might be up there too... and I'm sure there would be one or two of mine, but those'll be changing all the time as I write more and more and more.
I'm sure some Doom Eternal tracks will end up getting pretty high on the list too once I get the chance to buy the OST. There were some songs in that game I loved even more than the tracks from 2016.

I go by what songs are popular on the Billboard Hot 100 now and I have a bad habit of resetting my iPod when I get bored of it, which evolved out of me resetting it after my grandfather died in 2014. If he gets another hit he'll probably be on.

I would really like it if the Gorillaz ended up making a mainstream comeback but I doubt that it will happen which really sucks. Their music is good. I listened to them a lot at one point. But their only huge hit was "Feel Good Inc".

I'm sure that is true but mainstream their only successful song which was a top 20 hit was "Feel Good Inc". "Melancholy Hill" never had any mainstream success and "Clint Eastwood" only had a fraction of the success "Feel Good Inc" did. If it wasn't for that song, they would never have performed with Madonna at the 2005 Grammy Awards.

Here's a real question. What do we want to consider mainstream? The music industry isn't like it used to be. Radio stations license out songs now based on youtube hits. (and of course radio friendliness and copyright) So, if a song gets a few million hits I could consider it internet mainstream. I have seen many songs get spread around on the internet that would just not make radio play but everyone knows. Like that one song "Dancin".

What I consider mainstream is anything that charts on the Billboard Hot 100 no mater how high or low it is. If it is on there, there is obviously some interest in that song. It's chart position just tells you how popular the song is. I would link it, but I think some of the songs on the chart have explicit words in them.

But if the way the chart works now is they get songs based on YouTube views, wouldn't the top songs on YouTube be what's mainstream? Especially since the youngers almost exclusively get half their media from it?

Yeah, pop music's never really done it for me. Something about that particular formula and the sorts of themes they tend to go for just stopped being interesting. It's not bad music (at least most of it isn't ), but once I started to find bands I really like I just found there's so much more depth to what music is that the chart-toppers just fail to explore.

Often times too I look for music the way I'd look for something like game mods, just, like, browsing around on Soundcloud (or even the forums for some of the music software I use) and looking for songs random people are writing. It's not too difficult to find an extremely talented artist who nobody's ever heard of, and I just love when I can do that. Bonus if I can eventually buy or download something of theirs to add to my offline collection.

I tend to meet a lot of interesting musicians on online communities for other things, too, usually just by making it known that I'm one or that I'm interested in music. That's why I was surprised to find so few here.

Maybe 20 years ago at this point, maybe a little less, Counter culture was super popular so in tern bands were the pop music. When bands like Say Anything, The killers, The Strokes. All that was prime time radio music. That's probably the only time I can say I was into "pop" music.

And it's true, We've shared music from what I remember. Saying you're a musician is an easy way to get people to push a bunch of indie tracks on you.

He has an album that is supposed to be coming out at some point called "El Disco Duro" but he has been pushing it back and not releasing it since October 2016. Keep in mind he has been recording it for a full 2 years from Late 2014 to then and he released 15 singles from it since March 2015. I'm not sure if it will ever be released. But he is indeed still around and releasing music. Just not releasing the album.

Most of my top 25 end up fluctuating so at any given time my top spot on my iTunes for my most played song could end up changing with the blink of an eye. If I decide to play "Rumor" by Lee Brice that becomes number 1.

OK I have to be honest here now. Looking through all of those songs you posted, I don’t know ANY of them. However, I do know the artists but I haven’t listened to those specific songs. I know Sum 41 (not a lot), Usher, Fall Out Boy, N.E.R.D, Musiq, Eminem, Snow Patrol, *NSYNC and Panic! at the Disco.

Of course, I only have THREE Panic! songs on my iPod. “High Hopes”, “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” and “ME!” (which is Taylor Swift featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco).
