DDeer wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2020 2:59 pm Well I've finished the book, initial thoughts:

Is it worth getting? Yes
Is it Housepets in space? No

It is a good read, not a pg rating (some adult themes quite a bit of raunch).

I really like the different alien species Rick has come up with (the artwork helps a lot with visualising these - more please!). I found myself warming to Gert and the Geroo. The krakun definately come across as the pantomime villains of the piece but heck, who doesn't want space dragons in a story so I can live with that. Gert and his friend Hiani are perhaps too easy going at times but believable characters nonetheless.

I look forward to getting the next book when it comes out. I'd like to know more about the trinity and how it works, a prequel maybe, or is this covered in Ricks earlier writings?

Having read Argo, which I liked, this is a step up I would say in style and content with memorable characters. The bonus story at the end helped add a bit more depth to the Krakun also.

Hey so if you want to know more about the trinity stuff it's largely covered in Gre7g Luterman's Skeleton Crew!

Thanks! I'll have a read of that one, by coincidence just downloaded that a few days ago. Keep up the great work and I'll pick up a paper copy of your latest tome, just spotted I can get it here.

I should post as a warning that the Captain's Oath DOES have a bit of adult content. There is a sex scene that lasts ~2 pages, even though I should point out that there is a fairly graphic interrogation sequence that lasts 3 chapters which seems like it should be a more significant factor, but you know US culture

Good to know. I somehow managed once to write a play featuring several people dying in (in hindsight) HORRIBLY GRUESOME WAYS, and my school still allowed the drama club to perform it. The only thing I had to remove was a admitedly tasteless joke about Child Protective Services, a change of the setting and a use of the term "To Hell with that". Go US culture! (?)

I am actually not much of a prude when it comes to stuff like that though I don't want to write it out myself. People at different times in my life have called me deranged and twisted so I'm sure if I do get this I will be fine.

OH, I'm currently writing a book about a boy who gets possessed. I was planning to post an edited version with all the spooky stuff in Media Meridan but decided that was an awful idea so I stopped updating that.

When you are done reading it, without giving away any details you should tell us if any of your theories are right! :geek:

Yeah if you can do it that would be really great since on this forum I am going to assume that all of Rick's works are spoiler-free.

While I'm not sure if The Captain's Oath is my favourite Hayven Celestia novel (that might still be Fair Trade), this is an excellent book. It isn't always the most pleasant to read, but it is a very gripping and ultimately rewarding story.

The characters and conflicts are well rounded and believable, with Tesko making a great protagonist. She's a character who's very likable despite her flaws, and who I found it easy to root for her to overcome both her own demons and the more immediate threats to her and her loved ones.

Another great book from Hayven Celestia.

With all of these rave reviews I might have to get my hands on the book somehow! Of course my life is crazy and unpredictable so I need to save up my money for emergencies at the moment.

If its another comic by Rick then I would have to assume something is going on in his personal life. You will just have to be patient as I am sure he will get back to it when he is able.
