I'm currently in the process of making a second fursona. So far, it's an anthro female fennec fox named Kristy.

Okay, I changed the name to Hazyl. I'll elaborate more on her tomorrow.

Hazyl is an Egyptian fennec fox. She is very shy and is nice to basically everyone. She also travels around with an Egyptian Jackal ghost named Lydia.

Is it really a fursona if it doesn't represent yourself? That's just a "character."

Unless, of course, you're experimenting with your identity. Which is totally okay!

I couldn't tell you whether or not Elena is me or just a character. I'm quite boring in real life. :|

You could always just say she's an alternate version of you from an alternate universe - you know, as an alternative to her being a non-alternate version of you. :P

I should try to start expanding on what I said on the first page, haven't really thought about it in the past few months. Probably would take me a while to develop, but I guess that is the fun in doing it.

I am also not sure weather or not it represents myself, but I think it might. Hard choice to decide either way. I suppose it would be myself, as I have thought of myself as this character, and when I have thought of myself as this character I thought of it actually being me, not it being a separate character than me who just represents me.

That is worded very badly, and I am not sure how to fix it at the moment, but I think it gets the point across.

All you gotta do if put together a list of everything you like and would want and turn it into an OC. Its easy when you get the hang of it!

That works if you want an "ideal" fursona or OC, i.e. a fursona or OC that represents your ideal you or a you that you want to be. For a fursona that really represents you as you are you need to be more honest with yourself. Consider your strengths and weaknesses, your likes and dislikes and interests and disinterests, what you're good at or not so good at, what makes you tick, what are your pet peeves and flaws, and what are your strong points and the things that attract people to you. If you think of things like that and build your fursona around them then you'll have a really unique character and something that really represents who you are.

Incidentally those are also good things to consider when building any character for any purpose as it's those kinds of things that can help people understand and relate to a character.

For Furr, I put a lot more thought into his species and characteristics than into his appearance. I gave him green pants because I like green, and I gave him that hat because I have a similar hat that my grandfather gave me (much more precious now that he's passed away) and that I kind of think it's quintessentially Australian and I'm getting him glasses too because I've switched from contacts back to glasses. Other than that his appearance is pretty much that of a regular quoll, except his red nose which is a bit of an in joke because my nose is always the first part of me to get sunburned and when it does it goes really red. I picked the species of quoll because they like forests, mountains and pasture-land and those are my favourite landscapes, they're good at tree climbing and I am too, we both like our meat, we're both unique to Tasmania, we're both territorial (we like our space and can be antisocial sometimes), we're both relatively small and we're both cute.

Well, okay, the last one is a bit subjective but you get the idea. Furr reflects my likes, my skills, and a few of my flaws. Essentially he is me in animal form. He has unavoidably developed a little through RP but mostly that's quite superficial stuff like getting magical powers. Inside he's still the same quoll and he's still me. I guess to an extent that makes me a little protective of him because even though I'm not actually him he is very much a reflection of me and therefore I can't help but consider slights or inappropriate remarks towards him as the same towards me personally. I guess that's one of the dangers of fursonas but that's a discussion for another time and place.

I think if you think of it as being you then it is you, especially if it was designed that way. Even if it wasn't designed to be you but sort of became you then there's likely elements of yourself in it to which you feel you can relate. The question is more what version of you is it? Is it a reflection of a past or current you or a portrayal of the you you want to become or some combination thereof?
dtlux1 wrote:Probably would take me a while to develop, but I guess that is the fun in doing it.
Yeah, there's definitely no rush! Furr took me about three months to came up with and as I said, I still make tweaks occasionally. I came up with the name in July of 2013 and the character himself in mid September of the same. For the first few months I was a rabbit before I decided that quoll suited me better!

I think you worded it just fine. :)

Or you can make multiple fursonas that represent different aspects of yourself like I did: Tegu the addax was my lazy, dry, sardonic side. Otterboy the otter was my ADHD, playful, and friendly side. Charlie the New Forest pony was my determined, hardworking, and helpful side. (I never really developed those last two 'sonas, but now that I think about it, maybe I should.)

That's also definitely an option, Doug, and it's something I've seen a lot of furries do. Again though, I think you want to be a little bit honest with yourself and work out what parts of you you want to be representing though. For me though, I think Furr sums me up pretty well so I don't feel the need to split myself into little bits.

I never thought about it much... But I find I can't change my species right now anyway. That'd cause continuity issues with the fanfic. I may after I finish, but I have it in my long term project list.

I didn't bother trying to find an animal that best represents me, I just chose one I like.
Choosing one I like was difficult enough, 'cause there are so many.
I also haven't done much to really develop mine, haven't even decided on a name really...

Nice ref, Czukay, I like it! :)

So, Species Change Week is just around the corner! For those who don't know it's a chance for us furries to change the species of our fursonas for a week and pretend to be a different species and perhaps have our fursona drawn in a different way.

SCW this year is May 3rd-9th. Who's keen? What will you change to?

I can't make up my mind what I wanna be! The possibilities are endless! Perhaps I should emulate Brent and be a shapeshifter!

here's a drawing of my monkey form sleeping

he's tired from a long night of monkeying around, and he has some very important monkey business to attend to in the morning
(the wings are a standard option for all of my forms)

I won the drawing by naming the artist's new Fursuit

*crash* Uhh sorry guys. I think i stumbled upon this Thread ^^"

So since im new to this whats the difference between a OC and a Fursona?
From what i understand a Fursona is an alternate form of your own Person which you try to life out on conventions.
An OC would now be an imagined form of yourself in one of the Webcomics/Fan-Fics.

Am i correct with that?

You're not too far off.

A fursona is a character used to represent either yourself or a part of yourself in the furry community, whether that be on-line or at conventions. The representation can be as realistic or fanciful as you desire.

OC stands for "Original Character" and is quite simply any character created by an individual, regardless of whether or not it's a fursona.

That's my understanding of the terms, at least.

Ah ok thx for the explanation Hlaoroo.

So a OC has to be created by the Person using it and can be his own fursona but a fursona does not have to be created by the Person using it.

So in this case if someone would create his own fursona it would be an OC but if he decides to use a fursona which was created by someone else coming to my mind as example Howard the Duck even if its a Movie character could only be a fursona but no OC.

According to TV Tropes* an OC usually is an original character within the universe of an existing work (e.g. Sonic OCs, MLP OCs, Housepets! OCs), which is the use I'm most familiar with. Though apparently DeviantArt uses the term "Fan Character" for these and "Original Character" for exactly as Hlaoroo described it. So depends on where you go

Some artists do create character designs that people can buy and use as fursonas however a fursona would never be a well-known copyrighted character. Generally speaking a fursona is created by the person whom it represents and they're quite personal and hold a lot of significance to that person. They're not just a picture but a fully-fleshed out character, an embodiment of the furry or the person the furry wants to be. Fursuiting is just one way of bringing them to life. Other ways include writing stories or doing animations or songs or art featuring the fursona in different settings. So even though another artist may do the physical design for the fursona, I think the character themself is always very much an OC of the fury to whom it belongs.
