Who's tried dog/cat food or treats (and what did you think)?

So apparently there have been a few people in the "Do You Consider Yourself a Furry?" thread who have been talking about their experience with dog/cat food and treats. I figured I'd create a thread specifically for that subject. You can post your experience(s) and (if you have any) preferences here.

Dissenters, this thread probably isn't in your taste (yes, the pun was intended) - but please, try to be polite and not troll.

And yes, I'll share my experience first. I tried a piece of my dog's food (Science Diet) once before, but I spit it out when I found I would have chipped a tooth by biting it, I promptly spit it out. I tried again today and was able to chew it this time; I regretted it immediately. It was like eating a bland beef-flavored multivitamin (Blech!). I brushed my teeth thoroughly after that, but I did manage to keep it down. I don't think that's an experience worth repeating! I can see why my dog is so hesitant to eat it.

So, have you eaten dog or cat food/treats, and if you have, what did you think of the experience?

Hah! Lightweight! Kidding kidding. Well I'll start from the beginning. Dry kibble and dog cookies. Both we bland and tasteless, much like incredibly hard and stale cheerios. Next up, wet food in a can and chicken jerky. Wet food was edible. I'd buy it if I had no other option, otherwise I'd make beans in a can. Chicken jerky was incredibly hard but tasted like jerky. And last we have raw chicken wings, legs, breasts, etc and adorable bone shaped dog treats. I am Human, I cannot eat raw food, it is a massive health hazard to me. But it's chicken so I assume that if I were to nuke it but still keep it slightly raw, I can imagine the flavor. The dog treats, hard, meat flavored-ish, took me a bit to gnaw them down. Edible but I wouldn't try them.

By far the best was wet food in a can, but I don't know if it was raw or not, I assumed not. It was still fairly not for continued human consumption. But it's not inedible. Best treats are the adorable bone shaped ones that are meat flavored. Hard, takes some time, but meat flavored-ish.

I dunno what to do now...
*woof?*

EDIT : By far the weirdest post I've made here. I would not eat canned food. And no, now that I think about it, beans in a can are cheaper than canned dog food. I'd buy beans.

I've only tasted a few but I seriously don't suggest eating dog food. The chicken type stuff is alright and the dog beef stick things are not half bad. Any type of dry kibble kinda grosses me out. My dog doesn't even eat it xD. I'm going to say that it was just a weird experience overall...Now I just go to the bathroom on a fire hydrant and get away with it ;)

Well, it was weirder when people were talking about it on the "Do You Consider Yourself a Furry?" thread. I thought I would give this weirdness a home of it's own. :P

Well... many many years ago (maybe 30...) I tried dog treats, chocolate and milk drops, they tasted pretty well. Wet canned food smells terrible, I wouldn't try that. And wet cat food smells even worse. But it would be edible without problems, animal food has a pretty high standard in Germany, I think it may even be better than some food designated for human consumption, if I imagine some convenience food Image.

I should have added that it is wet food that makes me feel sick. I'm fine with dry food.

Like I said in the furry thread, Dog/Cat food (At least here in america) is held to standards that mean it can be eaten by humans.

While it may not taste or smell good, if a 4 year old decides to try a piece or two out of the dog's dish when you aren't looking, it won't hurt them.

I'm sure most young children have been curious about dog or cat food. And if they are not, all they would have to do is watch that "Rugrats" episode to get interested. :P

I got bored one day so I tried it. Wasn't like a big deal or anything just good old curiousity.

Why do I smell a Cracked article in the making?
Oh, frell, do I have to write it?
And, no, never had pet food. At least, that I can remember.

Back when I was in the service there was a little gourmet dog bakery off post that actually had a health department certification to make people food, too. So my pup and I would hit that place on the weekend, get a big bag of the beef flavored treats and go to the park to play and share the bag. They were amazing, although I used to get the worst puppy eyes used on me if I didn't share enough of them. heh

I have. It was a Milk Bone. Didn't taste like much of anything really.

I was with my friends one day and we were walking through a pet store that had dog treats in a basket up front. I decided I would try one to see what it would taste like, I didn't like it.

It tasted like cardboard with a really bad meaty after taste.

I do remember that when I was around 5 my aunt would give me those flavored dog treats and I liked those. It has been at least 10 years since I did that though.

It makes sense the flavor isn't very strong. Flavoring costs money, and as long as dogs eat it, humans would be none the wiser.

Dogs seem to eat anything so they really don't care much about taste.

That's the pet food industry for you! Marketing needs to be appetizing to humans, so they do things animals don't care about.

Such as coloring dog/cat food like meat humans eat, even if the pets can't see.

We have three types of cones (red, green, blue); dogs have two types of cones (yellow, blue).

I have never eaten dog or cat food, though I have pondered it inquisitively

I would get the flavored treats if you do, the unflavored ones taste really bad.

I may have had dried dog biscuits once, no flavour whatsoever. If you count treating dogs to steaks, I've had plenty of those. ;P

I have been tempted to eat Beggin' Strips since they are supposed to taste like bacon, but I decided against it.

On reflection, a really hard, really dry biscuit pretty much, or at the very least what a typical Milk-Bone tastes like.

Yeah that sounds about right, but we don't have biscuits around often to experiment.

They don't expect humans to try them. They can advertise them to taste like just about anything as long as dogs like them.

Had a peanut butter dog-shaped dog treat once. Felt and tasted like cardboard, but I ate it because everyone else who had gotten one to try was throwing then away.

Hah! Lightweights! *munched on cheese*

But you hate cheese.

It's a cheese shaped cat-treat, Author.

I've tried dog biscuits and kibble, but it was a while ago.

If that is the case, we should ship dogfood in from over there then!
