Black Friday now starts in the middle of Thursday here in the US. It seems to be a transition to the thanksgiving grocery shopping to the Christmas shopping time of year.
Nothing against Christmas, but it's consuming the month of November.

I went to a Sam's in Oklahoma on black Friday and I was full on prepared to clock people in the face. Surprise Surprise it was nearly empty of people.

You can get christmas cookies, chocolate, etc. already since 1st September in Germany... It's ridiculous to buy gingerbread and marzipan loaves in summer.

SEPTEMBER?! FIRST?! I wasn't aware Christmas lasted one forth of the year in Germany.Render wrote:Kateleo007 wrote:Yeah. Out here in California, the Christmassing starts before halloween in some stores.

I guess it's not as bad as Finland, where it's always Christmas.

It's pretty much impossible to get lost nowadays thanks to smartphones.
And then my mom always tries to advise me with directions when I'm going someplace I haven't been before. She needs to catch up.

My Dad's the same way. He has a Galaxy S3 and the most technical thing he does with it is check his Email. He even keeps a phone book in his work van in case he ever needs to look up a phone number or something because I'm pretty sure he doesn't even know that he can Google it on his phone.
I don't bother to try and teach or show him because he's not into trying to learn that stuff.

That's funny. I love direction with elements like "You have to turn left where [insert name of a shop here] has been."Sleet wrote:It's pretty much impossible to get lost nowadays thanks to smartphones.

I generally have no problems with reading maps and driving after that. BUT when driving through Hamburg to visit my friend I was lost EVERY time I went there... Once I had an odd thing, I've reached the railway station somehow, thought that would be easy, checked my map, followed the wide road, took the crossing, and was on the the way to the roundabout where I had to take the third exit and wanted to check the map again. All looked good while driving, but instead of getting to the roundabout I suddenly found myself back in front of the station...
Have no problems with that anymore since I use a navigation system. But Hamburg is the only place where I ever had problems.

GPSs aren't always reliable.
A couple of tourists in Queensland once drove straight into a bay while trying to get to an island because the GPS told them to. Needless to say they needed rescuing and they didn't get the deposit back on their rental car.

this to me is proof why I don't like GPS's. people rely to much on them that they blindly follow it and dont want to memorize where anything is (then they as me. where is this place, where are we...)Hlaoroo wrote:GPSs aren't always reliable.

I never use the turn-by-turn directions unless I'm driving for hours upon hours.
I've always been terrified to ride with someone who's using a GPS, especially when they look at the road for 5 seconds, then at the GPS for 5 seconds.

Smaller roads and more rural areas may not be accurately represented by electronic navigation services. Kari once had to give directions to a highway patrolman who'd gotten lost navigating via GPS and didn't have a physical map book.

Oh, yes.
According to the GPS I live in the middle of a paddock with no road in sight.
The GPS also thinks there's a road through the middle of some paddocks not far from my house but there's clearly no road and quite a few fences and cattle there instead.

Re: Chat Thread 41: Mod Maker
I don't mean a directions giving GPS. I mean one that simply gives you a compass, states your longitude and latitude and such. I have the satphone to call the coast guard or whatever. Of course if I planned for it, I'd bring along a compass, map, etc. I only use the kind of GPS you guys mean when I'm in the city.
Re: Chat Thread 41: Mod Maker
Would you use the Latitude on the GPS to calculate where it is you would experience constant night (66° 33' 44"?)

After my next move, I'm going to try and set my living up so I don't need a car for a while. Costs aside, relying on them is annoying.

You need a car where I live. Everything is just too far apart and there isn't much in the way of public transport.
I LOVE driving anyway so I like having a truck, even if I have to buy gas.

Same here, and I love driving as well. I can't even ride a bike where I live because biking on the freeway is a death sentence, especially during the winter (which isn't possible, even for the brave)... I don't even think it's legal, anyways.
I'll be happy with or without a car if I live close to where I need to be, at least until I'm done with school. I just hate relying on my car because my mechanical skills are limited.

as for decorations, some decorations take a while to set up(if you have a big yard) and you need a lot of decorations early.

Still no Christmas songs on the radio. I wonder if they moved them all to a channel that plays them 24/7?
Re: Chat Thread 41: Mod Maker
Today at work we had a holiday themed dinner. Nothing gets you in the Christmas spirit like refilling a bowl of eggnog a dozen times to covers of the same 3-5 songs.
I'm a relatively festive guy, i just can't do Christmas specials and music until like a week or so before Christmas. Not a big fan of all the Christmas commercials, television, songs, etc.
