Tarmac and Gambit, male or female?

Post by MasterAbsinthe »

Tarmac and Gambit rarely appear in the comic, but they seem to give the impression of being two otter dudes who live at the zoo. I haven't found any actual evidence on whether they are female or male, though. In their first appearance, one of them mentioned that he/she was excited that a new female otter had been introduced to their enclosure, but since we live in 2020 that doesn't tell us anything about their gender.

Has Rick ever referred to them with their pronouns? From the wiki page, they were just assumed to be males.

As an additional fun fact, here's a translation of the chinese otter from their first appearance

I'd guess they're dudes, but that's probably because I'm one, and so predisposed. :)
Buuuut, that line you mention does actually give us a clue -- that they're both the same, or at the very least, ahm, incompatible with each other.

Except for Thomas and Sophia, we haven't had a zoo episode in a very long time. Rick may have left those characters long behind, perhaps just out of disinterest. That happens in comics.

Well, it's only one of them saying that they're excited to have a female otter,we don't know what the other thinks!

Yeah but being that excited seems to imply he (s/he) doesn't already have one.
I'd like to see more of them personally. I like otters, or the idea of otters, even though the few times I've had the chance to meet one for real I didn't connect the same way I tend to do with wild cats or other kinds of weasels.

Either way it would be cool to get a closer look at how they live in a universe like this one.

I simply assumed that they both were male since in my opinion using names like "Tarmac" and "Gambit" is a bit more masculine.

I'm sure Jessica's got room for them. No, seriously, I really like otters, too. Down in the forest behind my childhood home (which I now inhabit again), there was a stream that hosted a family of otters. The pups were seriously delightful. They were also extremely shy. Eventually, they moved on - or perhaps met darker fates. Still, I think Gambit and Tarmac could wiggle into a niche in the feral family.

Too bad Gameb18oy doesn't come here anymore. He just loved otters and had one as an OC and wanted Rick to include them in the comic.

I have re-written their wiki pages to not include any pronouns. Gotta be on the safe side!

Good, but you missed one .... "TARMAC'S FUR IS DARKER THAN GAMBIT'S" is an easy fix. :)

Isn't "his" a pronoun though and I thought you were rewriting it because we didn't know their genders? If that is not what you meant, then please forgive me, as I was in 1st grade 20 years ago.

Who complained about what?

I also added a paragraph commenting on their gender:

I 'spect the only way this gets resolved anytime soon is someone comes in here saying they are an otter and they recognize the two of them one way or the other.
Unfortunately, it probably won't happen. That level of silliness only tends to happen when I'm involved. :)

Once again I think this topic would have benefitted from having Gameb18oy here and he could help us out as he is an otter.
