That's not exactly plagiarism in either direction, but it looks like Housepets! is popular in fictional universes too! Who knew?

I don't think that is actually referencing this comic.
Probably more of a pun on other comics featuring house pets.
Like Garfield.

Now... you've been treating your Sims right I take it?
No missing doors or toilets?
Hmmm?

What do you mean that's not what the signature is for?

Coincidence. Though when you zoom in the cat standing on the toilet IS pink. HMMMMMMM (either that or my color is wonky and it's actually orange, which seems more likely)

Hahaha while we're on the topic of plagiarism, two comics from arc 8 were complete ripoffs of Calvin & Hobbes, verbatim. In fact, even one of the titles was a copy of a Calvin & Hobbes title (Scientific Progress Goes Zonk) :P I'm sure Bill Waterson wouldn't mind, but still, that kinda bugged me

If you folks do a search, 'housepets' will also list a comic called 'House Pets' which is NOT related to Rick's work.

That's not plagarism, though, because Rick is referencing Calvin and Hobbes, not using the idea as his own.

Anyway I think this isn't exactly plagarisim because if you zoom in on the cat, it looks eerily similar to Garfield ._.

I know next to nothing about the Sims games, but that reads like a Pokemon parody.

Slapping is several steps short of a decent punishment. If anything I deserve to relive those horrid days in San Fransisco :? And yes Zander, because being a friend of a friend gives you EVERY right to straight up slap me :P

What is it with you n00bs and your weird threads? No work can truly be original, as all information is derived from other information. Have you not heard of an allusion before? *slaps OP*

EDIT: *also slapping Noms.*

OK I guess the title is a little misleading, sorry guys

But I think it's still pretty interesting that the name is more or less the same and the developers haven't heard of this site

Actually, this brings up a lot of concerns with plagiarism. What is plagiarism; to what extent is material considered 'borrowed' or 'plagiarized'?

On the original topic, I think that if Sims is indeed referencing this Housepets!, then it is not plagiarism. Aside from the premise of using house pets as comic material - which is by no means an idea unique to Rick - there is no explicit or implicit reference to Rick's comic. The name itself is rather public domain, and it is no longer uncommon to see cats and dogs sharing close-quarters living space. There is simply not enough material referenced to consider it as plagiarism. If it is a reference, then it is a very vague one. But for the reasons stated above, I think that is unlikely.

But, to reply to Anthro, you're partly right: there is no truly original work. Everything is based off of experience at some level, and is thereby unoriginal in its basis. When referring to fiction, however, I think the definition of 'original' is tentative at least. Yes, original means having material not based on pre-existing material, yet many 'original' stories are by this definition unoriginal. For example, we consider Rowling's work to be spectacularly original, yet it was based off of many pre-existing ideas of magic, logic, school systems, and other information that Rowling garnered from other texts. While I have no proof of this, I wouldn't be surprised if she read stories about magic as a child, and used some of the ideas as illustrated by these stories to shape her own.

In this way, I think a more fitting definition for 'original' is to create an innovative work, regardless of whether it is from scratch or if it has a distant basis to another text. Blatant references are out of the question - I can say my storyline for Rock 'n' Ride is original, but because it takes place in the Biker Mice From Mars universe, it is not actually original.
