Pixar seems to be headed the same downwards spiral like DW if they go for something as creatively bankrupt as a prequel.

I don't get why they decided on a prequel either, it seems like a straightforward sequel would allow for more interesting story opportunities. Monsters Inc seems like a weird film for a sequel at all really, but it's at least much better suited for one than the likes of Up or Wall-E. If they try to continue those, that's when I'll be upset.

I just want to say two things, I really hope they never continue UP and Wall-E, because both of those were amazing movies, and a big reason I love Pixar. I mean, in like, 10 minuets, UP told us an interesting love story with minimal dialogue, you got what was going on, and it was a great scene, I think speaks volumes about the writers and animators.

Pixar did good work with the Toy Story sequels because they took topics that came up in the original (what happens with the toys if Andy outgrows toys?) and explored them by building new plots around them.

So my theory is the quality of a sequel is strongly dependent on what it does with the established fictional universe. Does it add something new to it by exploring that and that aspect or is it just a rehash of the same old stuff?

I don't see what there's left to tell in the Monsters, Inc. universe. That Mike and Sully become friends is a foregone conclusion, so are their careers and the rest of their future life.

I would be more interested in the "open-ended" universes. What challenges have the Incredible's kids to face as they grow up? Something like that.

I'd prefer a new movie (like Brave), but A Bug's Life 2 wouldn't be terrible.

It depends on who was in charge of doing what, and how well the sequel's plot was constructed :/

I mean, i think that it would be cool, but look at Arthur and the Invisibles. The first one was really fun to watch... then the second and third ones were released, and I couldn't stand the series anymore
