While we're at it, I noticed US culture regards bluntness as a virtue, as an ideal to aspire to after seeing the prevalence of heroes getting flourishes for speaking their mind in various media.

Being blunt is sometimes very much appropriate and the superior way of conveying info, no question, it's just some people view anybody often doing this as a boor who doesn't think his opposites are smart enough to pick up on subtleties of speech. Those heroes we're normally meant to sympathize with can come across as pretty condescending at times.

My family and friends sometimes HATE how blunt I am, but I can't help it. I don't like all the nonsense and parading around a lot of people do just to avoid hurting someone's feelings. If someone is doing something badly, inform them. Not in an inherently mean way, but in a sentence or two rather than huge paragraphs that skirt around the core of the issue.

Naturally, this leaves me with less friends than those that skirt around the words, but I could trust most of my friends with my life, while those others could unlikely say the same. It's one of the few things I've done right with myself xP

Well, there's a difference between being blunt on principle in an attempt to be as objective as possible in any given situation and being blunt just for the sake of trying to put other people down. The former I actually would class as a virtue to aspire to; the latter is, obviously, just being a jerk and not really any more complicated a matter than that.

I've seen both in action, and I often have to make that distinction because I happen to be incredibly blunt when I feel that it's necessary and a lot of people (unsurprisingly) don't take that very well. I've also made it a habit to not sweat the small stuff, because given my brusque nature, the line which separates "brutally honest" and "jerkbag" can be crossed over very easily. If being completely honest won't really serve a purpose beyond hurting someone's feelings, then I think it should just be passed over. If, however, not being honest will negatively impact (or continue a previous negative impact) that person, then I think the situation should take precedence to any feelings which might be hurt.

On the topic of CISPA: what Daggy said. I'm still not overly worried about it. If I had a nickel for every law which passed the House, but ultimately failed anyway... well, you know.

The Internet won't let its disgruntled-ness go unnoticed. There WILL be coverage. It WILL be large. They WILL notice. The even MIGHT (doubtful rofl) actually listen to it :O It's likely a complete non-issue. No need to go THE SKY IS FALLING over something so silly. Not to mention, nothing in this bill is directly ABOUT the internet. It's about PRIVACY and INFORMATION. It's background is protection against cyber acts of violence, but that's all. It's not censoring things, it's allowing employers to share personal information.

On which note, we're straying into the political territory, and I believe that's frowned upon...so something else...

Anyone planning anything fun for this weekend? A bunch of friends are gonna be off playing the GW2 beta without me because I'm stuck doing all of the homework I've ignored this semester. I wanna play thoooouuuuggghhhh.

Corndogs used to scare me. But then I realized that they were (mostly) edible. So now whenever I get afraid and think that a corndog is trying to kill me, I just eat them. Sometimes with ketchup, but not always.

On the Approachable Mods subject - I always thought Sleet and Dissension were approachable enough (from only what I have seen, anyway). As for the others, I generally don't know them well enough to comment.

On the Bluntness subject - The only time I am really blunt is when people do not generally learn from their own mistakes. It is always better to allow others to make their own mistakes so that they learn from themselves rather than merely following instructions given to them by others, makes them more independent and capable of thinking for themselves. But sometimes people do not learn from their own mistakes and continue to cause misery (whether or not it is intended) by making those same mistakes again and again and again. Bluntness can be a good means to "knock sense into people" sometimes, especially when there is no other choice. However, like what has already been said, sometimes the informer could be seen as condescending, cruel or merely insensitive when the real reason behind such bluntness is nothing noble.

I'm not sure if I agree with this. While I think that desiring to learn from your own mistakes is an admirable quality, expecting others to do so is just setting up the people around you to get hurt. :/ I think it's important for people to develop their ability to think freely; that much I agree with. But ignoring people around you that are getting hurt until they reach the point of "not learning from their mistakes" just seems silly. If you can stop a person from making that mistake in the first place, they still learn, and will be better equipped to make that choice of their own accord in the future.

They can choose whether or not they heed your advice, but I think that given the choice, you should always at least give them that advice.
