I saw an episode today that simultaneously confirmed my complaints against the new episodes and instilled a bit of hope in me.
It was a follow up to Bubble Buddy, which from the beginning is a bad idea because that episode ended in a beautifully absurd way. It also started by running through the list of things I don't like in new Spongebob- annoying voices, gross-out shots, recycled jokes, and a general atmosphere of jerkiness. About halfway through, though, when they had finished its fun with the flanderized Krabs and Squidward, it actually was passable. The most striking thing, to me, was that I didn't find Spongebob himself annoying- which is miles of improvement. He still seemed to be more of the overreactive dimwit of late than the nerdly goof he was originally written as, but he wasn't a jerk, and he wasn't crying all the time.

It still wasn't impressing me, but it did lift my spirits a bit. Really, the one thing that I think made the entire episode worth it was the last minute, which actually did make me chuckle. So, a not detestable new Spongebob: a meaningful thrust, or misdirection?
