If we're going to get technical, everything listed so far falls under kingdom Animalia. Everything from an elephant to a cockroach is technically an animal. Whether they can be considered 'furries' is up for debate. Personally, I think the cutoff point should be at the squishier invertebrates (flatworms, slugs, etc).

Of course, there are differing schools of thought.

Creepy slug. Anywho, I dunno what would be under Furry, but I will just take it as how the definition of furry is. You make with it what you will, since there tends not to be one. Not a fan of Spiders so I would not say they are. Reptiles are more common and closely related, so I will say they are, since scaly just sounds very weird to me. Humanish insects I can not see as anything possibly cute, and will either put it under Sci-fi, Fantasy, or Horror. XP

Furry doesn't necessarily mean "Cute and Cuddly"

Good point, Tensa. But it seems to me that the further from human something is, the harder it becomes to relate to. Mammals are our closest relatives, so it makes perfect sense that mammals are the most popular fursona choices. Reptiles are further out, and less popular. And so it goes down to invertebrates. People (like me) might think of anthro insects as being interesting, but you will almost never see someone with, say, an ant fursona, because it's very difficult to relate to something so utterly inhuman.

Or if you just have a plain fear of the things, you obviously dun want to have one as a fursona, or even want to be near them, since well, they might constantly bring up things that will make you cringe. Insects, no matter what insect except Caterpillars creep me out. And the Human to inhuman thing is kinda what I was thinkin.

There's pretty much a reverse uncanny valley when it comes to the animals we like to anthropomorphize. Other primates are so similar to us that we don't really have much to change to make them like us, so they're uncommon in the fandom. Invertebrates and, to a lesser extent, non-mammals, are uncommon because how different they are from us. We want to anthropomorphize things that are similar to us but not too similar.

Well to be fair none of us are completely sane, if you're a furry/Scaly something about you is a bit off.

I personally think it'd silly to call something furry if it didn't have fur, but that's just me being pedantic.

What would a sea cucumber be listed under? Mullusk-y?

Sea cucumbers are echinoderms, not mollusks.

I think it's kinda silly to call someone weird or creepy for wanting an insect or other invertebrate as a fursona. I mean, it's all relative anyway. They're just being true to themselves, like the rest of us furries.

Nothing wrong with insect or arachnid fursonas. They're just so uncommon because they're so alien. It's hard to pin a personality trait on a robot-like organism

But potatoes can be boiled, mashed, and stuck in a stew. And furries like stew. So he's relevant.

I don't know whether this has already been discussed but I will be posting this question anyway:

What made you become furries?

I have recently been chatting with a furry and she told me her story, which piqued my interest in the subject. I wanted to post this question in a more public fashion to get more responses and see if there are any patterns.

And just as I told her mine, I shall tell you all mine too:

I have always been a furry but I never knew it, I never even heard of the furry fandom more than a year ago and, even then, it was only by chance. I loved to come up with stories and fantacies involving humanoid animals as a child (I must have been about 3 years old when I started doing this, and I hid these stories from my family, as you can imagine, for fear they would disaprove of it. I wonder what it was that made me think that way, perhaps it was my parents lack of appreciation for my imagination, though I couldn't say for certain), and it has only been a recent development (within the last three years) to write out my stories as real novels. After all, how many books are there on humans? Millions! There is nothing original about human stories anymore, every possibility (other than the future) has already been established in books. Therefore I decided to write stories not involving humans at all.

So that is my story. Now, what is yours? What made you become furries?

My answer: I never became a furry.

but this forum has definitely made at least sightly furrier than I once was. ^_^

You can anthropomorphize anything and have it be cool, after all that's how we got The Brave Little Toaster, Veggietales and Cars after all. It's just within furry, most people won't pay it any attention other then weirdness factor.
