I'm not a furry, I just have enough interest in the webcomics/art and enough friends that are furries to be automatically considered one.

And also, apparently, typing the phrase *paws at you* during an IM conversation is definite warrant for the question, "Are you a furry?!".

Sorry for the off-topicish but..
-thinks- I think I became a furry when I hit at least seven. My cousin used to take me to anime conventions when I was four, and I used to be so interested in those 'animals who spoke and walked like peeoples'. From six to twelve I would mimic the furries I saw at conventions, putting on a fake cat tail and running around; acting animalistic and feral. Plus, most of the movies I watched turned my style into what it is now. Cats Don't Dance, An American Tail... movies like that.
I was a bat at first, then when I turned thirteen I became a velociraptor. I've been one for six years now. I mean a velociraptor, not a furry.

Mod edit: let's watch what kinds of things we make reference to.

There's nothing off-topic about explaining how you became a furry. That's the point of this thread, after all: to talk about furries!

my mind was a few hours behind and I thought Sleet was referring to Foxstar saying the discussion was off topic before.

but now I change it to be addressed to you, saying that you were misunderstanding exactly what Foxstar had said was off topic, and that yours was a fully in topic post.

either way, the he meant Foxstar.

There is no problem with going off topic from a current discussion as long as you keep within the purpose of the thread itself.
That being said, I like how you said that you were a bat at one point in time. I do rather like those things, they are rather silly animals, and their Swedish name makes them sound like a mouse. :3
A velociraptor I have mixed feelings about, since they are rather......scary. Quite very scary actually, no offense.

I found this fandom 4 years ago, surprised that there were more people like me in the world. I couldn't really connect to having a fursuit (creepy) or even a fursona.
But I actually kind of think I'm a furry now.
So you can say you corrupted me xD

It's called being weird. :P Haha, JK.

Hot topic has a BUNCH of stuff like that. I went in there around Halloween and they even had a fox package deal with tail and ears. They have a bunch of animal hats and stuff there too.

It's only a matter of time before furry stuff invades Hot Topic. It's just barely below the "popular enough people know about it but unpopular enough that people turn their heads" range that Hot Topic seems to enjoy.

Does that mean it's necessarily bad? I hate most of the stuff in Hot Topic, but among it is an occasional awesome thing you can't get anywhere else. I only go there in hopes of finding something neat like that. Not to make some sort of fashion statement or to "rebel" against the mainstream.

That's why I'm hoping they start picking up furry stuff. 'Cause that's something some people find cool, but is too weird to show up in normal stores.

I just hope that if it happens, it's animal-themed clothes and accessories and not just "FURRY PRIDE" T-shirts or crap like that.

Not sure if I'd ever feel comfortable wearing anything even vaugely furry related.
Maybe if it was just animal themed and not obviously furry.
I dont people I dont know assuming it, just as long as I can deny it around friends and family.

Hot topic for the most part is the bane of my existence, but they do occasionally have cool stuff,
I got my first Misfits CD and my Minor threat shirt there.

And you're a braver man than I, Dissension. Assuming you don't just wear that shirt for the purpose of taking pictures of yourself (kidding!).

Depends what you mean by "furry stuff." Probably a decade or a bit less for being a furry. If you wear tails, ears, collars, etc., probably never.

I was talking more about just being a furry. The whole tail/ears/collar thing doesn't exactly appeal to me. But then, I'm a fairly un-furry furry. For lack of a better term.

So you think a decade or less, huh? Hmm. Be interesting to see how it plays out...

I'd probably side with a decade or less seeing as its not too bizarre, just brow raising. Then again, I'm at a loss at what exactly the merchandise would be. Tails, ears, and accessories I already see people walk around with, though I think their just Twilight fans. As for Dissension's shirt, I'd probably stop and stare for awhile as my brain computes what exactly I just saw.

Brain: Hmm, foxman sitting on word 'Fur'. Must be some kind of business mascot.

Me: But brain, we knows of anime conventions and its cousin furry conventions
Brain: Pretty sure its a business. Maybe they sell paper or office supplies......Oh wait! He's a PETA activist, right?
Me: .....wait, how do I know more than my brain?

And then on the actual question of being a furry, well, I honestly don't know what that affects. Not like furries go around killing people or stealing. You say it and people are confused (See Brain) but its just a preference, like music.
"Rancid - its like a wine or cheese." "Or like roadkill!" ".....or like roadkill...."
