What made you become furries?

I have recently been chatting with a furry and she told me her story, which piqued my interest in the subject. I wanted to post this question in a more public fashion to get more responses and see if there are any patterns.

And just as I told her mine, I shall tell you all mine too:

I have always been a furry but I never knew it, I never even heard of the furry fandom more than a year ago and, even then, it was only by chance. I loved to come up with stories and fantacies involving humanoid animals as a child (I must have been about 3 years old when I started doing this, and I hid these stories from my family, as you can imagine, for fear they would disaprove of it. I wonder what it was that made me think that way, perhaps it was my parents lack of appreciation for my imagination, though I couldn't say for certain), and it has only been a recent development (within the last three years) to write out my stories as real novels. After all, how many books are there on humans? Millions! There is nothing original about human stories anymore, every possibility (other than the future) has already been established in books. Therefore I decided to write stories not involving humans at all.

So that is my story. Now, what is yours? What made you become furries?
watched too much scooby-doo as a child

Honestly I'm not sure, always liked animals and looking back at my childhood I've just always kinda been one.

My story is the same as Seth and Miles Kingford, although I think being a HUGE Balto fan was a contributing factor to me being a furry. I kind of liked furry things before I even knew what furry was.

Yea, it is a shame but it is true. Kinda dislike how that is, but School Students tend to be like that and want something to tease people about.

You can tell why I keep it secret... But I feel bad for doing so, but I can't tell anybody, but I can't keep it secret forever... But if I tell somebody it might end badly... But it could end wonderfully

Whatever, those people are just jerks. Ignore any teasing you get, and talk to this person politely and ask why they're avoiding you.

Not sleepy, drunk. This was another night. That said, the fact I was drunk means you should definitely take it with a grain of salt. Or a salt rim.

Though the fact that you want the ability to shape-shift into an anthropomorphic creature does make me feel you are somewhat one, no matter the fact that you have said you are not like 100 times on this thread.

I am not forcing him into anything, just stating that I feel under how I define the word that he does touch onto the thing slightly. Being Human half the time and animal the other half just makes me feel that he is partially so, but does not wish to be one often. Something like that, I am pretty bad at wording things.

Believe me. I would say it if it were so. and I think about whether or not the forums have turned me fairly often. I always come to the conclusion that because I still relate more to my human form, I am still not a furry.

I am almost positive that I truly became a furry because of Lion King. I've always loved animals, and so talking animal movies piqued my interest from a pretty young age, but nothing really clicked for me as far as -being- a furry (though I didn't know it at the time) until I re-watched The Lion King when I was 13.

I became super obsessed with it, joined an art site (because I also decided I was obsessed with drawing at the time) The Lion King Fan Art Archive (TLKFAA), and created a fursona because everyone else on that site seemed to do it. It was a pretty fail fursona (and I was a pretty fail artist), so I dropped it not long after, though not before I wrote up a 60-ish page fanfiction (also a complete fail) which I haven't finished and will never finish. Turns out my old fursona is a pretty hardcore Mary Sue. Lol. Though I don't really blame myself; I was just a really bad story-teller at the time.

ANYWAY. It wasn't until I was about, say... 16 that I happened across deviantArt where I found out that there was actually a fandom for anthropomorphic animals (outside of specific ones like the TLK fandom). That's when I started following people who put out anthro art, usually the same people who drew TLK stuff or things that came up in similar searches, and I started to really grow attached to art of the more humanized anthros. The concept just really appealed to me. After that, I started taking a much stronger interest in things like werewolves and other such anthropomorphic concepts that never really meant anything to me before.

It wasn't until my senior year of high school that I decided to join a "furry" forum, because I thought, "Hey, I've been a fan of this stuff for a while now, maybe I outta try to make some friends with a similar interest." It didn't really go terribly well, because most of the people were... I dunno *too* furry for me? I'm really not an overly emotional or "huggy" type, so all the random hugging and glomping and such was kinda overwhelming. While I was there, I decided to make another fursona, though once again it was a rushed and sort of "just 'cause" kinda thing, so I've since dropped it as well. I think I had decided (with the help of one of the members that I talked to a good bit on that forum) to be a dragon/wolf hybrid or something of that nature.

Now, I don't really have a fursona. So I just say that *if* I were to have one, it'd likely be something simplistic like a Red Fox. Because I *do* relate with foxes and the things that they often symbolize in various cultures quite a bit, so it would make sense (to me).

And yeah. That's my story. Abridged, but still. I managed to make it a wall of text regardless. XD
