For me, yes, I'm a furry, but it took me a while to actually realize this.

I usually associate myself with the grey wolf, though I love cats and dogs just the same.

I would answer, but then I'd have to reveal the fact that I run a secret furry identification organization.

It usually hovers around that ratio. Much less furry than some other Web comics' forums, from what I'm told.

Those would be comics that are read pretty much exclusively by furries. The best furry comics are the ones you don't have to be a furry to love!

That's because Housepets! is the best furry comic out there.
Followed by TwoKinds, in my opinion.

It's not really based "in" the fandom. Sort of like how while The Lion King is a furry movie, it's not part of the fandom. where as something like half of the furry webcomics you might read are made by furries for furries, and are actually rooted IN the fandom.

Housepets! is kind of like a furry comic in the same sense Pixar movies are children's movies. It was made with the demographic in mind, and it expects it to be the largest portion of the fandom, but it refuses to target it in such a way that alienates other demographics. A lot of other furry webcomics aren't like this at all, and don't even bother to consider the hypothetical human component of their fanbase.

Though I am still curious if the ratio for the non-forumites are also 1:3? There seem to be a lot of commenter that doesn't visit the forums.

What I find funny is that there aren't even MORE human readers. This is a pretty innocuous strip all around; I can't really see anyone being scared off because of furries.

Unless there's a whole lot more of you than I thought.

Housepets!, like most webcomics, are spread by word of mouth. It has plenty of human appeal, but not necessarily enough human exposure. It's mostly furry circles that've heard of it.

My guess involving what Brawler said is that more Furries than Humans join these forums.
I think maybe the minority might be intimidated or not really care as much to join this community as a furry would be, as for Furries, they can fit in here better than most places. Humans can fit in almost anywhere.

In any case, if people who read the comic were forced to take this question, I am sure the numbers might be drasticly different. This is mainly just the number of Furries on the forums instead of the number reading the comic. ^^;

All furries are humans. However, an easy way to refer to the humans that are not furries is simply "Human"

It's just easier that way.

I think part of the non-furry appeal for House Pets is right in the name, pets. It doesn't place the animals in a high position in society, so it seems more 'normal' and not as far out there as say, an all anthro society... Pet owners would probably be more interested as they would make connections between the comic and what wild things their own pets do...

I think that's a lot of it. A lot of furry comics are made by furries for furries, and one of the ways they ignore the non-furry demographic is have them star anthropomorphs for no good reason. If a comic is zanier and less realistic, like, say, Precocious or VG Cats, people tend not to care, but when you get to things like Jack, where the characters could very easily be humans (one plot point aside), it kind of makes humans think, "why is this even furry?", which turns them off. Housepets! doesn't do that, because the pets have every reason to be animals, and the setting is very familiar to furries and humans alike. All it takes is more exposure and I think that 25% will be able to grow significantly.

then there's the readers like me, who appreciate good characterization and story telling. even if the characters could easily be human, I don't care. I enjoy the story of Jack as much as I enjoy the story of Gunnerkreig court(which is the first primarily non-furry comic I've gotten from the forums)

also,

Just to repeat me and Flint's point and Brawler's question/suspicion, the result of this poll can only represent the human to furry ratio of this forum.

Whether the ratio of all readers are 1:3 as well is still unknown. There are readers who only comment AND there are readers who don't even comment at all!

Typically when there's a population you survey and you take a sample from the more "involved" individuals, the results will lean away from "normal." So presumably more than 25% of the Housepets! readers are human.

Because the furry fandom has a lot of different opinions going on from the inside and the outside! It takes a lot of thought to set everything straight. ^_^
