I think he told them he was "off panel" at some point during TC2. Tarot also told him to "get back behind the black" soshe might be aware as well.

In Walt Kelly's Pogo, characters occasionally used the panel boundaries as kind of a prop, tripping over it, running into it, bouncing a ball or something up against it. Sometimes, Albert the Alligator would strike a match against the panel to light his cigar.
