I tried to have it be funny even if you don't know what she's saying!

(But yeah the first panel is "But I'm out of money! Ugh, I'll try anyway . . ." and the last panel is "Did you actually learn Arabic or have you been guessing this whole time?" Which I hope is suitably ironic)

There's an old strain of vaudeville comedy where one of the performers doesn't speak the language of the other (or the audience). The humor derived from a mix of mine, textures, facial expressions, and how the responses of the native speaker help the audience interpret the proceedings. Sorta like "Who's on First" made more convoluted by colloqialisms, accents, and the characters talking past each other. I it also helps if one comedian is a transparent boon and the other a bemused, anxious animal. (Sophie has a very expressive face.) It's tough to pull off, but it's fun ... And, yeah, it's also neat to know what they're saying, I admit.

Lots of folks will understand a foreign language well but prefer not to speak it.
She doesn't impress me as shy. Few camels are. Maybe it's her little way of irritating Thomas for treating her as a 'beast of burden" ....
