It's nice to see Mr. and Mrs. Sandwich again. :)

Also, I love Satau in panel 3.

Apparently "rolling with it" is something that even the ancients mastered.

The thing about a play on words is it doesn't usually translate very well.
Douglas isn't my real name, but because of a name block put on me by a higher-order being known as Djinni, I can't say my real name.

Fun fact: deliberate mummification didn't begin in Egypt until about 2600 BC. So Satau probably genuinely doesn't know what Earl is joking about.

He probably gets the idea, seeing as he's under a spell of mutual understanding (he got the concept of electricity, after all); but I guess the idea of "a dried up corpse wrapped in cloth" isn't all that funny.

I don't know how well a spell of mutual understanding would facilitate puns

Nope. He may know the word but, without the context that wasn't around in his time, he would have no idea about Earl's joke. It would be like me saying to someone from the 15th century 'get me a Sandwich'. They wouldn't know what I meant unless I told them it was two pieces of bread around a filling.

Eating with the Human Sandwiches,
with no idea what a Sandwich is,
Satau makes his mark in the Peanut world,
whilst Grape?
She keeps her thoughts tightly furled.
There's no sign of our magnificent moggy
as she leaves things to the muscled dog, he
listens to the worst joke Peanut's ever heard -
dad jokes?
They really are bad; lethally absurd.
You're out of time and running on politeness
as you ponder your way through this… slight mess,
so staying in well with the humans is good aim.
Who knows?
Maybe it's not just losers in this game?

Well, that's the main issue of translation and culture. Actually interesting how many jokes just don't work in other languages. Puns are probably even more affected by this. I'm helping a guy learn English at work, and he has told me how odd a translation can be. I agree with him.

Especially puns using foreign terms. The spell came from Tarot, Tarot lives in America, Mummy is a term in british culture for mother but that isn't required to understand them since they live in America and wouldn't use that term normally. So on top of it being a pun, the meat of the pun would go right over his head.
And yes, I am overthinking this!

This as well.

Also I just wanna say that Satau is slowly becoming my favorite. :D

I knew "are you my mummy?" would come into this, it just had to happen. So I take it that the sandwich household just doesn't ask any questions about the on goings of there pets world.

Well, Wikipedia says "about 3400 BCE," but if Satau comes from 5000 BCE (still around 1,600 years earlier), it doesn't make any difference to him. After all, 7,000 is a long time in dog years.

A few years ago, I wrote a story about Anubis, who was puzzled by the Humans turning their noble dead into jerky...

Oh, thanks. Now I've got Jimmy Buffett in my head, singing Dad Jokes to the tune of Boat Drinks. Maybe Welshie can come up with the new lyrics.

I get what you mean, Satau. ;) I'm liking this ancient dog more and more, he's so funny. :D Instead, Earl isn't that much funny. What a bad joke. :P The third panel is great. :) Actually, Satau has no idea of what Earl is talking about, but well, he's laughing at that, no? So, let's laugh together!
Is Grape eating at the table too? Probably yes, and surely she's like here again. :P

I'm really liking how Satau is just going with the flow here. Mr. Sandwich does have to work on his humor though!
The animated signature I've used for years is too big for this forum! When I get time, I'll have to deconstruct it and make it smaller!

Do we know that, though? It could be a spell that lets him know English, as opposed to just translate it

My favorite part about this whole arc has been Satau's body language. It just seems so fluid!

Well, I would classify these as both dad jokes AND Earl jokes. This is a man who named his pets peanut butter and grape jelly and married a woman named Jill after all.

By the way, what is that meal? Pork chops and mashed sweet potatoes?

So, you think you can stomp on my Unicode joke with your cruel jackboots of logic. Well... OK, you can!

That would be more useful, if it made a change in his mind he doesn't have to worry about it wearing off. Kind of powerful, though.

Like how Peanut just casually looks at him as he shrugs. Guess Satau is lost on this one. Don't we usually depict royalties doing this stuff all the time? Are you royalty, Earl?!?

unless said rhymes are the result of the translator actively correcting for the idiosyncrasies of the translation.
Most important thing I've learned from D&D?
No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.

It's really amazing how well the translators of Asterix managed to retain or at least reconstruct the puns that littered every page.
