It doesn't seem to update the page you use to change the preference.

My tip: have two tabs open of the forums, one on the main page and one that goes to the user preferences. Change the forum style and apply, then refresh the main forum page tab to see what it looks like.

Dang, where was this post 24+ hrs ago when I needed it, heh. Just went through a 150 page thread reading over old stuff after I figured out how to change the URL on my own, testing and figuring out which number to change and by how much.
