The only flaw with the Cosmic arc is how isolated it is from everything else. Take the PeanutxGrape arc that happened earlier before Peanut/Tarot and Grape/Max fully developed and ended with them being, "just friends" but on a happy note for both. That got a lot of characters and situation...

I feel a bit sad about this, since it seems like I think this is gonna lead into a heart stringing situation where King's choice is influenced by one of his new friends.

Might be looking too much into it but I could see this turning heart stringing like, "It's a Wonderful Dog's Life"

Good call on no time travel, DC comics treats it like it's a casual event to do it. :P Perhaps it represents the number of friends he has made or maybe the number of connections he has in his life? Well times change with this, so it's no surprise Comedy would as well.

Eventually they needed to slowly change it, after all keeping at it wouldn't work as well unless they could pull of an Animaniacs or Tiny Toons writing style.
